Bills safety Jordan Poyer is at the tail end of his NFL career. Retirement is imminent â perhaps even at the end of this season.
As the days wind down, heâs exactly where he wants to be.
âIâve said it many times, this is where I want to retire,â Poyer said Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show. âI love the city, I love the organization. I couldnât think of a better situation to be here with the role Iâm in. ⦠Iâm just embracing it.â
The longtime Bill has started the last two games in place of Taylor Rapp, who is expected to miss the rest of the season following knee surgery.
Poyer Acknowledges Retirement is Near
Poyer said last week via WGRZâs Jonathan Acosta that he plans to retire following this season.
âLook, Iâm not naïve,â Poyer said. âThis is most likely my last one. Iâm trying to enjoy every moment: the good, the bad, the indifferent and just be part of this team for this run and go out the right way.â
Poyer signed with the AFC East rival Dolphins last year after spending 2017-2023 in Buffalo but returned this season via the practice squad. The 13-year veteran and former Pro Bowler was brought in to provide leadership for the Billsâ young safety group but has seen his role increase in recent weeks because of injuries.
Poyer’s Experience Vital for Bills’ Young Secondary
Poyerâs career stats include 915 tackles (620 solo), 12 sacks and 24 interceptions, but his best years have come in Buffalo.
The Bills brought back Poyer in August, hoping he could return to his 2021 form when he had 93 tackles, three sacks and five interceptions and was named an All-Pro. He followed that up with a Pro Bowl appearance in 2022 after recording 63 tackles and four interceptions.
With injuries piling up in the secondary, Poyerâs return has been invaluable. The Bills â 6-2 and a half-game behind the Patriots in the AFC East â are ranked 12th in total defense and ninth in points allowed (20.9 per game).
