The Buffalo Bills got a significant 39-34 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
Buffalo sometimes looked like it might not secure the win, but quarterback Josh Allen stepped up, throwing for 251 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 78 yards and a score. Additionally, Christian Benford’s pick-six helped the Bills clinch a vital victory.
The Bills‘ victory was not only crucial for keeping their playoff hopes alive, but also significant for their head coach, Sean McDermott.
McDermott Recorded His 95th Career Win
McDermott recorded his 95th regular season win, marking the third-most victories in NFL history for a coach during their first nine seasons.
The Bills brought on McDermott in 2017 after he spent six seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.
Buffalo’s decision to hire McDermott stands out as one of the best the team has ever made, alongside the Bills’ first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, selecting Allen.
Since the pairing of Allen and McDermott in 2018, the Bills have emerged as one of the NFL’s premier teams. Now, they are eager to finally capture a Super Bowl title and, hopefully, bring home the first Super Bowl title in franchise history.
The Bills Showed a Lot of Toughness vs. the Bengals
Before the Bills can clinch the Super Bowl, they need to secure significant victories to position themselves for the playoffs. McDermott was pleased with Buffalo’s performance on Sunday.
“The toughness of the football team was on display, full display, McDermott told reporters after the game, via Joe Cali, WGR Sports Radio 550. “Taking it down to the wire. It’s a heck of a team, a well-coached team. We have a lot of respect for them. Obviously, an elite quarterback, and we knew it was going to be tough.
“I thought the coaching staff did a phenomenal job of adjusting throughout the game and then coming up with some big plays, obviously at the end of the game with Christian Benford, Jordan Phillips, with the tip pass on the A.J. [Epanesa] interception. And then Josh’s play overall, certainly the last play of the game, or close to the last play of the game… just phenomenal play on his Part. Super proud of him. Certainly still a lot to learn and things that we’ve got to do better. So we’ll get back to work on it this week.”
The Bills have a major game coming up this Sunday when they head to New England to face the Patriots, who are first in the AFC East.
In Week 5, New England traveled to Buffalo and defeated the Bills. Now, Buffalo is eager to turn the tables and seek revenge.
New England is on a 10-game winning streak and has an impressive 11-2 record. If it beats Buffalo, the Patriots could soon clinch the AFC East title, forcing the Bills to battle through the wild card for a chance to make the playoffs.
It will be interesting to see if the Bills can take care of the Patriots and possibly get back into the division race.
