Buffalo Bills’ tight end Dalton Kincaid has been dealing with a lingering knee injury for the last two weeks after missing a four games in November. As the season enters it’s final few weeks, Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott issued an update on how the team is managing Kincaid’s injury.
“We’re trying to manage him, because he’s dealing with the knee,” McDermott said. “It’s basically day-to-day, week-to-week. Trying to get him to a spot where he’s as fresh as possible for the games.”
Kincaid was listed as a DNP during Wednesday and Thursday’s practices and was a limited participant on Friday. Because of this, questions arose on his status for the Bills game against Cleveland this weekend.
“I don’t feel like that right now,” McDermott said on potentially keeping him out of Sunday’s game. “Now, I don’t want to commit to that because if something comes up tomorrow where he’s not feeling great – it’s really a day-to-day ‘hey, how’s he feeling, what’s the reps for this day, what does it look like for the game.’ So it’s something we’re trying to manage and get through right now.”
McDermott admitted that Kincaid’s injury is more about management than fully healing it at this juncture of the season.
“You get to a certain part of the season where it may not get much better, but how can we help him get to gameday at this point, and have as many reps as possible,” McDermott said.
Bills’ Tight End Room Providing Boost to Offense
Buffalo’s tight end room of Kincaid, Dawson Knox, and Jackson Hawes has been a massive part of the Bills offense this season. The three have combined 1,037 yards and nine touchdowns, and have been the heartbeat of pass protection for Josh Allen as well.
Knox has been with the Bills for seven seasons and has been a stalwart in the tight end room. He has 26 touchdowns in his career and has always accepted the role given to him; when Kincaid came in in 2023 and was a better pass catcher, Knox accepted the smaller role for the good of the team.
Hawes was taken in the fifth round of this years draft and has been effective on and off the field as a glue guy in the Bills locker room.
Bills Battling For AFC East This Weekend
The Bills win over New England in week 15 kept the AFC East within reach; granted a long one at that. Buffalo needs the Patriots to lose at least one game against the Jets or Dolphins in weeks 17 and 18 to have a chance at the division, but if New England wins out, they’ll win the division for the first time since 2019.
The Bills are still in the drivers seat of their own destiny. They can leap over the Los Angeles Chargers in the standings with a couple of wins and claim the top wild card spot, which would have them face the AFC North winner in the first round.
Bills-Browns kicks off at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21.
