Bills’ Sean McDermott Shares Positive Update on DT Ed Oliver

The Buffalo Bills are fresh off their first loss of the season in Week 5 at the hands of the New England Patriots, meaning they are going to be eager to bounce back in Week 6. They will have a great opportunity to do so against the Atlanta Falcons, and for the second straight week, they will be playing a primetime game.

Getting some key injured players back on the field would certainly help, with one such player being veteran defensive tackle Ed Oliver. After suffering an ankle injury in Week 1, Oliver hasn’t suited up since then, but according to the latest update on his status from head coach Sean McDermott, it sounds like he’s expected to be back on the field against the Falcons.

Sean McDermott Issues Ed Oliver Injury Update

Through five games, the Bills have been lucky to avoid having many injuries, but being without Oliver has obviously hurt their defense. While he’s never earned a Pro Bowl or All-Pro selection, Oliver has been a pillar of consistency for Buffalo’s defense since he was selected with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Oliver was a beast in the team’s season-opening comeback win against the Baltimore Ravens, as he racked up six tackles, one sack, and a crucial fumble forced along the way. As noted above, though, he suffered an ankle injury along the way, and that has prevented him from suiting up over the past four games for Buffalo.

It seemed like Oliver would have a shot at playing last week against the Patriots, but he ultimately ended up getting ruled out again. After a solid week of practice, though, Oliver got himself off the injury report, clearing the way for him to play against the Falcons. Sure enough, McDermott provided an encouraging update on Oliver’s status when speaking to reporters recently.

“He’s looking good,” McDermott said of Oliver on Saturday. “Coming off of being out for a little bit of time here, so think practice has been good for him and getting him back and knocking some of the rust off as well. I think he’s getting excited.”

Getting Oliver back would be a huge boost for a defense that hasn’t always been at its best through the first five games of the season. He’s a dominant three-down lineman who can hold up against both the run and the pass, and while the Bills will likely ease him back into the action, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him make a big impact right away.

The Falcons have been a bit of a confusing team through four games, and while they are going to be fresh after enjoying their bye week in Week 5, this should be a good opportunity for the Bills to get back in the win column, especially with Oliver on the field. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET on Monday night, as Buffalo will be looking to earn its fifth win of the season.
