Bills Starter Reveals Bizarre Details Surrounding Mysterious Training Camp Injury

Dawson Knox, the Buffalo Bills’ fan favorite tight end, suited up for his first practice of the season Thursday afternoon. Knox opened up the season on the non-football injury list, but took the field today in a limited capacity.

“It was great,” Knox told the media. “I mean, I didn’t do much, but just being back out there with the helmet and shoulder pads on. Being with the guys participating in summer practice, it sucks being out and having to watch. So actually being able to get back out there and do a little bit of it, it’s just so much better that way.”

Knox also addressed how he suffered the injury. He told reporters it happened on the very last day of his individual training, on the very last 20 yards of his final sprint.

“We were doing curved strides and on the last probably 10 steps just felt a little tweak, just enough to where I had to call [head athletic trainer Nate Breske],” Knox said. “Get up here as fast as I could and make sure we’re rehabbing it the right way.”

Knox, who is beyond eager to return to action, is doing his best to take his recovery slow.

“It’s one of those things you got to take slow and do it the right way. We have the best trainers in NFL. Strength staff is incredible. So I trust them completely,” said Knox.

Starting Tackle Spencer Brown Also Seen For First Time

The Bills currently employ a laundry list of injured players. Too many to name quite frankly. However, atop the list is right tackle Spencer Brown.

Like Knox, Brown was seen on the practice field for the first time today. Brown practiced to an even lesser capacity, reportedly just doing drills off to the side of the action.

Brown is dealing with a back injury, which SI’s Ralph Ventre says is par for the course.

“The 27-year-old Brown has battled back problems since being drafted by the Bills at No. 93 overall in 2021, but recent availability has not been an issue,” Ventre writes. “He started every game in 2023 and made 15 regular season starts last year. He missed only one game due to a mild mid-season ankle sprain and sat out the Week 18 finale with the rest of the starters in 2024.”

Damar Hamlin Taking First Team Reps

Adding on to the laundry list is Bills defensive back Cole Bishop, who has not practiced since Tuesday while he deals with a quad injury. Filling the gap he left has been another fan favorite, Damar Hamlin.

While haters around the NFL try to diminish Hamlin to his injury, real Bills fans know how solid the fifth-year sixth round selection has been since entering the league. Prior to the scary injury in 2022, Hamlin was one of the team’s leaders in snaps played through 15 games.

He spent most of 2023 rehabbing before putting together yet another impressive 2024 season.

Last year he recorded 89 tackles in 14 games, and brought in his firs two career interceptions. Bishop was a second round pick two seasons ago. He put together a decent rookie campaign so it will be interesting to see how the Hamlin/Bishop snap splits playout opposite Taylor Rapp.
