Bills’ Struggling Position Group Listed As Team’s Biggest Weakness

The Buffalo Bills knew going into the 2025 NFL Draft that they had to improve their defense. There were a few areas the Bills could target on that side of the ball, from the defensive line to the secondary.

Buffalo decided to draft Kentucky’s cornerback Maxwell Hairston with their first-round pick to lock down opposing teams’ receivers.

On Tuesday, during training camp, Hairston was seen walking with trainers after suffering a non-contact right knee injury. Currently, there has been no update on the rookie’s status, but if he were to miss time, that could be a big blow to the defense.

Hairston was drafted because the Bills need cornerback help, and if he’s not out there, then the secondary will likely have struggles.

Bills Secondary Named Team’s Biggest Weakness

Even with Hairston being healthy, the secondary was still going to have question marks, and Alex Ballentine from Bleacher Report thinks the secondary is the biggest weakness on the roster.

“The load the Bills put on Allen wasn’t even about his supporting cast all the time. It was about a defense that was 22nd in EPA allowed per pass. The secondary got the team in more shootouts than it needed to be in,” Ballentine wrote. “Buffalo is pinning a lot of hope on first-round pick Maxwell Hairston to be a solution. He’ll take over for Rasul Douglas, who was not re-signed this offseason, as the other outside corner opposite Christian Benford. If that doesn’t work out, then the Bills could be hoping Tre’Davious White still has one good season left.”

Buffalo’s Super Bowl Window Is Now

The Bills’ window to win a Super Bowl will be as long as quarterback Josh Allen is at the top of his game, and sadly, that could be coming to an end over the next few years.

Allen is still a great quarterback, but with him turning 30 years old next year, the hits he has been taking could start to add up.

Quarterbacks who have a big frame and like to run the ball can start to slow down over the years. Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton ran wild like Allen, but by the time he reached his early 30s, his body couldn’t take the hits anymore, and his career was over.

Buffalo must take every opportunity they have to win a Super Bowl seriously, which means it should try to upgrade the secondary through free agents or a trade.

There aren’t a lot of great free agent corners available, but bringing in veterans who have NFL experience could be critical for the team.

It will be interesting to see how the Bills will handle the Hairston injury and if they are willing to add any more players to the defense.
