The Buffalo Bills lost a major piece of their defense this week when Ed Oliver suffered a torn bicep, leaving their star defensive lineman out for months.
The team could have an opportunity to add a well-accomplished replacement, with one analyst suggesting the team make a run at an eight-time Pro Bowler who could be hitting the trade block ahead of next week’s deadline.
Bills Could Find Expert Help to Replace Ed Oliver
SI.com writer Zach Pressnell suggested the Bills could find a trade partner in the struggling New Orleans Saints, a team expected to sell off pieces at the trade deadline. Pressnell urged the Bills to go after defensive end Cam Jordan, saying his versatility at defensive line would help fill the void from Oliver’s loss.
“If Oliver is set to be sidelined for the foreseeable future, the Bills could get desperate at the trade deadline,” Pressnell wrote. “They wouldn’t need to add a superstar defensive lineman, but they could add one veteran option to help soften the blow. That’s where the Saints and Jordan come into play.”
Pressnell added that the Bills could utilize Jordan in a number of ways, and might be able to land him for a late-round draft pick.
“A trade for Jordan would make a lot of sense,” Pressnell wrote. “He could slide inside and play the interior defensive line for the Bills down the stretch. It would give them a reliable run stuffer to help boost the team as it pushes for the playoffs.”
The Bills could also lean into their in-house options, giving a bigger share of snaps to promising rookie defensive lineman Deone Walker or returning linemen Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi.
Bills Take Big Blow in Ed Oliver’s Injury
Oliver was hurt late in the first half of Buffalo’s 40-9 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, leading the team to quickly rule him out for the game. Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters on Monday that he had suffered a torn bicep and would need to undergo surgery to repair it, leaving him with an indefinite absnence.
“Tough loss. Ed’s a really good player. It’s an opportunity for someone else to step up here,” McDermott said.
The Bills had just gotten Oliver back the previous week after another extended injury absence. After a strong start to his season in the comeback win over the Baltimore Ravens, Oliver suffered an injury in practice and missed close to a month.
As the team noted in announcing his injury, Oliver was one of the best defensive linemen when he was able to take the field this season.
“Oliver’s 2025 season hasn’t gone the way he had hoped as the star DT had missed time from Week 2-5 with an ankle injury,” the team noted. “When on the field though, Oliver was one of the league’s most impactful defenders, recording a sack in all three games he’s started (Ravens, Falcons, Panthers).”
The report added that McDermott would be meeting with general manager Brandon Beane to assess the needs and how they might find a replacement for Oliver.
