Bills Urged to Trade for 6-Foot-5 Wide Receiver to Boost Offense

The Buffalo Bills have undergone some big changes to their wide receiving corps this offseason, shuffling around veterans and setting up a pair of pass-catchers to take on a more prominent role.

The team could have more roster shifting before the season starts, with one analyst predicting the Bills will make one more big move to add size and versatility to the receiving corps.

Bills Could Trade for Big-Bodied Veteran

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay suggested trades for all 32 NFL teams, urging the Bills to look at Detroit Lions wide receiver Tim Patrick to boost their size. The 6-foot-5 veteran has made 176 receptions for 2,403 yards and 15 touchdowns in his five NFL seasons.

Patrick made a big comeback with the Lions last season after suffering back-to-back injuries in 2022 and 2023, showing that the 31-year-old still has a lot left in the tank. He made 33 receptions for 394 yards with three touchdowns last year.

Kay suggested the Bills could turn to Patrick if two of their other options at wide receiver don’t pan out.

“General manager Brandon Beane clearly understands the Bills need upgrades in the receivers room, as they recently signed Grant DuBose and have veteran Gabe Davis—who started his career with the club before an unsuccessful campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars—coming in for a visit following the release of Kaden Prather,” Kay wrote.

“If Davis doesn’t work out (he’s coming off a knee injury that cut short his 2024 season), the Bills should look to the trade market to acquire a steady veteran such as Tim Patrick.”

Patrick is on the roster bubble in Detroit, and the Lions could be willing to trade him for a modest return. He also also be an affordable option for a Bills team tight against the salary cap, Kay added.

“Patrick likely wouldn’t cost the cash-strapped Bills much, as Detroit has a logjam in the receiving corps and might be willing to move on from Patrick for cheap,” Kay wrote.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane has a habit of swinging late-summer trades, adding depth and talent to the roster and often shedding players who were near the cut line.

Bills Have Other Options Emerging

While the Bills have the top of their wide receiver depth chart set with Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman expected to get the bulk of targets, the team has some room for movement lower in the depth chart. They made a trio of veteran additions — Elijah Moore, Joshua Palmer, and Lavishka Shenault — but only Palmer has solidified a spot on the depth chart.

Reporter Mike Moriatis of SI.com predicted that Tyrell Shavers will work his way up from the practice squad last season to the active roster, while the more accomplished Moore could be fighting for a spot. Moraitis suggested that Moore could need a good performance in the team’s preseason finale to secure a spot.

“You wouldn’t expect a veteran like Moore to have to save himself in a preseason finale, but that might be the case when the Bills take the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday,” Moraitis wrote.
