The Buffalo Bills will return from their bye this week against the Carolina Panthers, and with two weeks before the NFL trade deadline, the team could be looking to make a few moves.
One area the Bills need to improve is their run defense; they are currently allowing an average of 156.3 rushing yards per game, ranking 31st in the NFL.
The Bills could use another defensive lineman or even a linebacker, and one possible linebacker option just became available.
Logan Wilson Could Be a Fit For the Bills
According to ESPN, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson requested a trade on Thursday, and Fansided’s Brandon Ray would like to see the Bills trade for Wilson.
“Wilson currently has two years left on his deal that he has with the Bengals and it wouldn’t be a huge hit for a team to take on the contract if they trade for him,” Ray wrote on Thursday. “The Bills need help at linebacker due to injuries and inconsistency through their six games. Let’s not forget as well that Wilson and Josh Allen played together at Wyoming so there would be a little bit of familiarity.”
The Bengals drafted Wilson in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft and have played in 75 games for them over six seasons, recording 536 total tackles, 5.5 sacks and 11 interceptions.
According to ESPN’s Ben Baby, Wilson was a key part of the Bengals’ turnaround in 2021.
“Wilson has been a pivotal member of Cincinnati’s defense in the turnaround,” Baby wrote on Thursday. “In 2021, two years after the Bengals had the worst record in the NFL, Wilson was a starter on a Cincinnati squad that reached the Super Bowl. In six seasons with the team, he has made 75 starts and totaled six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 11 interceptions.”
The Bengals weren’t a good football team before Wilson arrived in 2020, and some of that had to do with him and the defense coming together, but mainly because of quarterback Joe Burrow.
Cincinnati held the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, taking Burrow after his amazing final year of college at LSU, where he threw for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns, going 15-0 and winning the national championship.
Wilson Could Help Buffalo Beat Kansas City
Burrow helped change the Bengals, and less than two full seasons into his NFL career, he led the team to a Super Bowl, where they fell to the Los Angeles Rams.
The Bengals haven’t been back to the Super Bowl since that season, but did go to the AFC title game the following season, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Wilson could bring his Super Bowl experience to Buffalo, along with his insights from defeating the Chiefs in the playoffs, just as the Bengals did in the 2021 AFC title game to reach the Super Bowl.
It will be interesting to see if the Bills do pick up the phone and call the Bengals for Wilson, and even if they do, there’s a good chance the Bengals won’t do business with a playoff contender from their own conference.
