Bills Writer Urges Team To Part With 5-Year Veteran CB

During the 2025 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills ensured to get help at the cornerback position. It didn’t take long for Buffalo to take their first corner since they used their first-round pick on one. With the 30th pick, the Bills selected Kentucky’s corner Maxwell Hairston.

Hariston played three seasons for the Wildcats and in 2023 recorded five interceptions. Hairston can play the ball, resulting in takeaways. The Bills have to love getting more opportunities for quarterback Josh Allen to have the ball. If Hairston can turn the opposition over, then Allen will have time to shine.

Buffalo also drafted Ohio State cornerback Jordan Hancock in the fifth round and Virginia Tech corner Dorian Strong in Round 6. Both have a legit chance of competing for a roster spot this fall.

Maxwell Hairston Suffered An Injury At Camp

The only issue is that Hairston suffered an injury during training camp practice last week. The 21-year-old corner only suffered a sprain of the LCL and will be week-to-week.

Buffalo dogged one with Hairston only being out for a limited time. The good news is Buffalo has a handful of cornerbacks that can step up in his place. One of those corners was just signed to the Bills this offseason.

The Bills signed cornerback Dane Jackson to a one-year, $1.3 million deal in March. Jackson was a seventh-round pick of Buffalo’s in 2020, spending four seasons with the team. Last offseason, the 28-year-old cornerback signed with the Carolina Panthers.

Jackson only appeared in nine games in Carolina, starting three of them. Now with Jackson back in familiar territory, he could compete for a roster spot.

Bills Urged To Cut Dane Jackson

With Hairston now out for a few weeks, it could lead to someone making the team who wasn’t supposed to. However, Brandon Ray from Fansided doesn’t think it should be Jackson.

“I understand why the Bills brought back Dane Jackson in free agency, but since Buffalo drafted three cornerbacks, including Max Hairston in the first round, it doesn’t make sense to keep him around,” Ray wrote. “Not to mention, the Bills also signed Tre’Davious White, and I don’t see him not making the roster. Unless the coaches are looking for coaching continuity within the defensive scheme, Jackson should be on the outside looking in by the time roster is solidified.”

Since the Bills only signed Jackson to a one-year, $1 million contract, cutting him won’t be much of a deal. He was likely signed just in case the Bills couldn’t walk away with the corners they wanted in the NFL Draft, and he would be around for protection.

With the Bills taking three cornerbacks in April, the rookies will likely have the advantage over Jackson if they are at the same skill level. It would be nice to have Jackson’s veteran experience around in the season, but it does seem like he will need some help to make the active roster.
