Blue Jays Add ‘Raw Power’ As Latest Bo Bichette-Kyle Tucker Odds Plunge

The Toronto Blue Jays are in the middle of the action during the MLB offseason. Following their big splashes with their starting rotation, there is speculation about the future of a few players on their team. Not to mention, that this speculation extends to the likes of Bo Bichette and Kyle Tucker. Will they sign both of them? Do the Blue Jays come into Spring Training with just one of them? Do they strike out on both? The clock continues to tick.

With the Winter Meetings in the rearview mirror, it’s time for the Blue Jays to dig deep. While the futures of Tucker and Bichette in Toronto were handed curveballs, the team continued to make complementary moves.

Toronto Blue Jays Select Hedbert Perez in Rule 5 Draft

On Wednesday, December 10th, the Blue Jays selected three players in the Rule 5 Draft. Two of those youngsters were pitchers, and one was an outfielder.

Spencer Miles and Travis Kahn are the two pitchers taken by the Blue Jays. However, the addition of outfielder Hedbert Perez should raise fans’ eyebrows. There is reason to believe that this could be an impactful addition for Toronto.

According to the Blue Jays’ transaction page, they purchased the contract of Perez in the AAA phase of the Rule 5 Draft.

The now 22-year-old was an international signing by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2019. During his first year with the organization, he was ranked their eighth-best prospect.

Hedbert Perez Scouting Report

The scouting report on him at the time revealed his tools on both sides of the ball, particularly his batting.

“One of the better pure hitters in his class, Perez has a pretty swing for a player his age,” the MLB prospect page reads. “Combining bat speed and feel for the barrel with a quick, compact left-handed stroke. Those qualities, along with his discerning eye, have led scouts to project Perez as a future above-average hitter.”

“The fact that he already shows above-average raw power as a teenager makes it easy to dream on his offensive ceiling.”

The report continues with an assessment of his defensive skills from the outfield.

“Perez has the potential to remain in center field long term with his blend of athleticism, plus speed and range,” the report continues. “And it certainly doesn’t hurt that he also has great instincts and gets good jumps. Overall, Perez has one of the highest ceilings in the Brewers’ system and should offer a glimpse of that potential when makes his highly anticipated debut in 2020.”

In 2025, Perez played in the A+ and AA minor leagues. Spending most of his time in A+, he finished the year with 14 home runs, 64 hits, eight stolen bases, and 53 walks in 88 games. In the minors, he recorded a .211 batting average with 304 at-bats.

Blue Jays’ Dreams of Signing Kyle Tucker Are Complicated

Alden Gonzalez released a new report on December 12th regarding Tucker. For Blue Jays fans, it’s definitely a mixed bag.

He opens by explaining that the Blue Jays are the most likely team to hand Tucker the most significant contract.

“If there’s one team willing and able to give outfielder Kyle Tucker the $400 million he seeks in free agency, it’s the Toronto Blue Jays,” Gonzalez wrote for ESPN. “According to many of the agents, executives, and managers at baseball’s annual winter meetings this week.”

And that’s where the Los Angeles Dodgers come into the picture.

“The Blue Jays ultimately might not land Tucker,” Gonzalez continues. “The Dodgers — in search of an outfielder and also interested in Tucker, though only on a short-term deal.”

Having the Dodgers for competition isn’t news to the Blue Jays. However, neither team is afraid to spend, as both are keen on making a repeat World Series appearance.

While this report doesn’t pour cold water on Toronto’s chances of being the frontrunner for Tucker, it certainly makes things less certain.

Latest News on Bo Bichette

The latest update on Bichette doesn’t count out the Boston Red Sox. According to Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox aren’t out of the Bichette sweepstakes just yet.

“Boston remains engaged with free agent Alex Bregman, a source said,” Cotillo wrote on December 12th, 2025. “And is involved in trade talks with Arizona on Ketel Marte as well as Houston on Isaac Paredes. The Red Sox are one of many teams interested in Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan. A new name has also surfaced for the Red Sox, who, according to a source, are pursuing Donovan’s teammate, Willson Contreras, in trade talks.”

“The Red Sox also remain interested in high-priced free agent Bo Bichette and versatile infielder Jorge Polanco, sources said late Thursday.”

By my count, that’s seven different infielders that the Red Sox are interested in. While it raises concerns to have Bichette still on Boston’s radar, the volume of other players they are interested in should ease fans’ concerns.

For now, Blue Jays’ fans are just in “wait and see” mode until another shoe drops.
