The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the better teams in Major League Baseball over the past few months, and shortstop Bo Bichette has been a big reason for that. Now five games ahead of the New York Yankees as of Tuesday night, it looks like the Blue Jays are in an excellent position to win the division, at the very least.
It’ll be interesting to see how they play in the postseason, but the Blue Jays are in a great position to go on a run here over the next few weeks to months.Â
However, with some free agency questions over the next few months with Bichette, many question whether he could stay in Toronto.Â
Others believe that Bichette might be overpaid or price himself out of the Blue Jays. That includes MLB Insider Robert Murray of FanSided, who named him one of four players destined to be overpaid during free agency.Â
âIt feels like Bichette has fallen under-the-radar nationally when it comes to free agency, with a lot of the conversation shifting toward Schwarber and Kyle Tucker. But in a weak free-agent market, especially at shortstop, Bichette will be in position to earn a contract north of nine-figures.
âI hesitated to put Bichette on this list because heâs worth every penny heâs about to get. Yes, I realize he struggled last year. But heâs been terrific in every season besides last year, with his career numbers being .294/.337/.469 with 111 home runs and 437 RBI. This season, heâs exceeding those numbers â .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI â and has quieted every concern about his down season in 2024,â he wrote.
Would Bo Bichette Be Overpaid
As he touched on, saying Bichette would be overpaid might be unfair because of his production. He’s on pace once again to lead the American League in hits, which will be the third time in his career.Â
Unfortunately for the Toronto Blue Jays star, however, he’ll be out for the rest of the regular season. MLB.com reported that Bichette will be out due to a knee injury.
Fortunately, skipper John Schneider didn’t make it seem like itâd be as long as some feared.
âIt confirmed what the first [diagnosis] was, which is just a sprain to his knee and nothing further required,â Schneider said, per MLB.com. âItâs rest and rehab, then getting back as soon as he can.â
Can Bo Bichette and the Blue Jays Agree on a Deal?
It’s only fair to wonder if Bichette and the Toronto Blue Jays will reach a deal. Still, it’s also essential to consider whether this injury will impact Bichette’s free agency.Â
According to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, he thinks that Bichette will do whatever it takes to get back on the diamond. Understanding that he hits free agency and is a big-time competitor, Bichette has all the reasons to return as soon as possible.Â
âIt still feels like weâre a week away from a more meaningful update to Bichetteâs potential timeline, which isnât expected to come until heâs back on the field and going through drills. Bichette is incredibly competitive and entering the final days of his contract with the Blue Jays before hitting free agency, so heâll be as motivated as anyone possibly could be, but his body will need to cooperate first,â Matheson wrote.
