Blue Jays Eye Surprise 79-RBI Free Agent Slugger Amidst New Trade Rumors

The Toronto Blue Jays have their hands in every area of their roster. Despite losing Game 7 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series, they aren’t resting on their laurels. It’s the MLB offseason, but they have been grinding away at adding prospects and free agents who will help the team both now and in the long term. The futures of Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman, and Ketel Marte are closely linked. But, now, so is the future of Yoan Moncada.

On the prospect side of the ball, the Blue Jays have several prospects who are shaping up to be solid big league players. One of the brightest spots is Jorge Burgos, who is fresh off a season where he led his team in RBIs. Geovanny Planchart is another prospect who has solid power potential.

But what’s the deal with Moncada? Here’s what you need to know.

Toronto Blue Jays Linked to Yoan Moncada

While most people are still hip-deep in turkey, stuffing, and countless other pleasantries of the Christmas season, the Blue Jays are still rounding out their roster. Part of that involves getting at least one more infielder for the 2026 season.

According to MLB insider Francys Romero, Moncada has been linked to Toronto.

“Several teams, including the Angels, Pirates, White Sox, and Blue Jays, have shown early interest in free-agent third baseman Yoan Moncada, per sources,” Romero wrote in a social media post on X on December 26, 2025. “Despite thumb and knee issues, Moncada had a solid 2025 and could contribute even more next season among third basemen.”

At this stage of the offseason, it’s not surprising for several teams to be in on free agents. Because of this, an under-the-radar hitter like Moncada drawing interest from several teams should be expected. According to Romero, the Blue Jays join the Los Angeles Angels, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago White Sox as suitors for Moncada.

What the Blue Jays Would Get With Yoan Moncada?

Moncada has been in the MLB for almost a decade and brings a strong skill set to the plate as a switch-hitter.

When he was first drafted, one scouting report spoke glowingly of him, touting him as a player with a “five-tool” package.

“Moncada is one of the most physically blessed players in all of baseball,” Jarrett Seidler and J.P. Breen wrote in September 2016. “His physique is such that he should beware the attack of a wild boar sent by his enemies. His raw power is an easy plus, and his arm strength is plus-plus. Although it plays down in game situations due to accuracy and mechanics.”

“It all looks and feels right for a five-tool major league package.”

Over the last few seasons, he’s battled some injuries. However, he still looks to have a lot of power in his swing.

Yoan Moncada Stats

In 2025, he recorded 58 hits, 35 RBIs, and 12 home runs in 84 games. Moncada has only played 100 or more games in four of his 10 MLB seasons. But when he does, he racks up a solid statline.

His best season came in 2019. That year, he swung for 161 hits, 79 RBIs, and 25 home runs to go along with 10 stolen bases in 132 games.

Despite the shortened 2025 season, he was still near the top of the Angels’ sluggers in some statistics.

Among batters who played at least 80 games, Moncada ranked fifth in batting average (.234), third in on-base percentage (.336), and fourth in slugging (.448).

According to FanGraphs, he had the third-best wRC+ (117), with only Mike Trout and Taylor Ward ahead of him. Compared to the 2025 Blue Jays, he would have had the seventh-best wRC+, between Alejandra Kirk and Tyler Heineman.

Is Moncada a Back-Up, Back-Up Plan?

MLB insider Jon Heyman has recently dismissed the idea of Marte landing with the Blue Jays.

“I’m still sticking with either the Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, or Boston Red Sox,” Heyman said on a recent Bleacher Report stream. “I don’t think it’s gonna be the Philadelphia Phillies or Toronto. These teams that are looking at Bregman could look at Marte, but I’m still looking at those teams. It’s possible he ends up staying with the Diamondbacks, too.”

Marte isn’t the only infielder the Blue Jays have been linked to. They have also been connected to Kazuma Okamoto.

Recently, Heyman has connected a few free agents to both the Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox.

“The Red Sox are also considering Bo Bichette, Kazuma Okamoto, and Ketel Marte,” Heyman wrote on December 25th about the Red Sox’s options outside of Bregman. “The Pirates, Angels, Jays, D-Backs, and Cubs are among others interested in Okamoto.”

Of course, all of this speculation dies the moment Bregman or Bichette signs with the Blue Jays (or both). Even if Toronto can secure Tucker’s services, the questions in the infield will remain.

Now that Christmas Day has passed, things should pick up one way or another.
