Blue Jays Get Concerning News on George Springer After 84-RBI Season

The Toronto Blue Jays got some concerning injury news on star hitter George Springer ahead of the season.

Springer entered 2025 with plenty of question marks. There was some thought that Toronto should dump his salary after a terrible 2024 season. However, he had a stellar season and was a key reason why the Blue Jays made it to the World Series.

Down the stretch and in the playoffs, Springer dealt with injuries, and it appears it’s still a nagging injury. Due to the injury, Springer decided he wouldn’t play in the World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico, according to elnuevodia writer Antolín Maldonado Ríos.

“El Nuevo Día learned from a person familiar with the recruitment process that Springer attributed his decision to an injury,” the article read. “He did not specify whether it was a new injury, or the discomfort that plagued him during the past playoffs on the Blue Jays’ path to the World Series, the first for that team in 32 seasons in the Major Leagues.”

If it is a new injury to Springer, it would be concerning news to the Blue Jays. He’s expected to once again be a key impact hitter for Toronto. Springer is in the final year of his six-year, $150 million deal with the Blue Jays.

Last season, Springer hit .309 with 32 home runs and 84 RBIs. In the playoffs, he hit .284 with 4 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Springer’s Decision Leaves Puerto Rico in Flux

With Springer deciding not to play for Puerto Rico, it put the country in flux for their lineup for the WBC.

Springer was expected to play a key role for Puerto Rico. Along with Springer, Kike Hernandez also announced he wouldn’t play for Puerto Rico in the WBC. But Maldonado Ríos believes the country still has options.

“Puerto Rico still has options for the outfield with Heliot Ramos, of the San Francisco GiantsMJ Meléndez, who became a free agent in the Majors, as well as Javier Báez, who although he is mostly an infielder and in past Classics has played second base for Puerto Rico, comes from being employed for more than 50 games with the Tigers as an outfielder,” Ríos wrote.

Puerto Rico, however, could get Riley Greene to play if he isn’t named to Team USA, which could be a boost, especially after Springer withdrew his name.

Springer Dealt With ‘Significant’ Injury During Blue Jays Run

During Toronto’s run to the World Series, Springer dealt with an injury.

Springer was injured during the ALCS and then sustained a right oblique injury during Game 3 of the World Series. After the season, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said the MRI on Springer revealed “significant inflammation” but no tear.

Springer hit the go-ahead three-run home run in Game 7 of the ALCS to help Toronto advance to the World Series. He hit a home run while dealing with an injury. After Game 7, he said he was going to play through it.

“I love this team. I’ll do anything for these guys,” Springer said. “I’ll do anything to try to play. I love this place.”

Blue Jays manager John Schneider called Springer the team’s heart and soul in 2025.
