The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to land one of the biggest prizes in MLB free agency — and could reap even more benefits if they are able to pull it off.
After last season ended in disappointment with a collapse in Game 7 of the World Series, the Blue Jays are seen as one of the frontrunners in the sweepstakes to land Kyle Tucker. A new report suggests that the active MLB trade market suggests the Blue Jays could find value in their newly redundant pieces if they’re able to land Tucker.
Blue Jays Could Lean on Strong Trade Market if They Land Kyle Tucker
While the Blue Jays are aiming to land Tucker — and looking at some other big free agency targets — trade rumors are heating up on another player. MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Chicago White Sox are gauging interest in outfielder Luis Robert, and finding plenty of it.
“Next up for the Chicago White Sox after the Munetaka Murakami signing: They still would like to move CF Luis Robert for pitching depth and are engaged in talks with the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds,” Nightengale shared in a post on X.
The high trade interest could be a good sign for the Blue Jays, Fansided’s Brandon Glick suggested. He noted that if the Jays are able to land Tucker, they could also fetch a good return in trading off some of their redundant players.
“This conversation will really become timely if the Blue Jays sign Kyle Tucker, who would immediately displace [Anthony] Santander in right field,” Glick wrote. “With George Springer taking up all of the at-bats at DH and Daulton Varsho locked into the starting spot in center field, Tucker’s presence would effectively mean that there’s one open spot for all of the aforementioned players.”
If the White Sox do end up getting a good return for Robert, it would be a good sign for the Blue Jays, Glick added.
“There’s clearly a path here for the Blue Jays to extract some value for superfluous talent. If Luis Robert can still draw trade interest in 2025, so too can all of Toronto’s reserves,” Glick wrote.
Blue Jays Vow to Remain Active
The Blue Jays have been linked to nearly every big name on the free market, including Alex Bregman and their own Bo Bichette. Blue Jays CEO Mark Shapiro said the team will remain active on getting deals done, especially given the competitive nature of their division and the arms race starting to build after the Baltimore Orioles landed Pete Alonso.
âMy philosophy on free agents is there is no such thing as close,â Shapiro said on MLB Network Radio on Sunday. âYou either are done, or you are not done; there is nothing in between. We are still working to get better. This is the bottom line: our division is an absolute beast.
âYou can talk about what Iâve experienced in 34 years, almost 35 in the game, and one thing that is clear to me is there is nothing like the AL East. ⦠The bottom line, to answer your question, we need to get better.â
