The Toronto Blue Jays have been searching for an impact bat, and the team is going after the big three hitters.
Toronto has shown interest in the likes of Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman as the Blue Jays are looking to add an impact bat. Although none have signed, MLB insider Buster Olney believes Toronto will sign at least one of Bichette or Tucker.
“I think that where the Blue Jays are, theyâre going to get one of these two guys at a price â either Bichette or Tucker â at a price that theyâre comfortable with. One of the two,â Olney told TSN 1050 Torontoâs First Up on Friday.
Olney also believes there could be some musical chairs for the top free agents, where, depending on where one signs, it will impact the others.
“I think your comparison to musical chairs is exactly right,” Olney added. “Because the question is, at some point, if youâre the team, the player, youâre going to want to find a deal.
“And I think that the Blue Jays are in a great position to get one of the two. And because of the way this has played out, I think that they can just sit back and wait until they get the player at their price.”
Regardless, if Toronto can land one of Tucker or Bichette, it would only further bolster the team’s offseason.
Blue Jays Not a Lock to Add a Bat
Despite Toronto showing interest in the key offseason hitters, the Blue Jays may not land any of them.
Most insiders have predicted that the Blue Jays will sign at least one of the impact hitters. However, insider Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet said it’s no lock that the team adds a hitter.
“A few people asked about Kazuma Okamoto. Teams expect higher floor than Murakami. Low K% with power,â Nicholson-Smith wrote on X. âJays have big Pac Rim presence & learn about all FA from Japan & Korea, incl. Okamoto. Toronto interest level unclear tho. No lock Jays add bat.â
Nicholson-Smith did clarify his comments, as he said Toronto remains in contact with the top hitters, but there’s no guarantee the Blue Jays will land any of them.
“To be clear: Jays are in contact with reps for Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman and others,â Nicholson-Smith added. âTheir best-case scenario includes adding a bat and thatâs absolutely in play. But in free agency, things donât always go the way you hope, as Jays know from experience. So: not a lock.â
Is Toronto the Favorite for Tucker?
Entering the offseason, the Blue Jays were pursuing the big bats, and the team was after Tucker.
Tucker visited the team’s spring training facility, and MLB insider Mark Feinsand of MLB.com believes Toronto is the favorite to sign him.
âThe consensus No. 1 free agent of the offseason has had a relatively quiet market to this point. With his visit with the Blue Jays last month at their spring facility in Florida representing the biggest news of his winter,â Feinsand wrote.
âToronto remains the favorite to land Tucker, sources said. Though the Mets canât be counted out, given their need for outfield help and their general willingness to spend big when they feel itâs appropriate.â
Tucker is a four-time MLB All-Star.
