Blue Jays Have Their Eyes on More Big Name Free Agents

The Toronto Blue Jays are attacking the open market with full force. After the heartbreak of dropping the 2025 World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, they are poised to be big players in the MLB free agency market. That started on Wednesday, with the (reported) addition of pitching ace Dylan Cease. With Cease on his way in and another pitcher potentially on his way out, it’s easy to predict that Toronto isn’t done addressing this area.

A new report indicates that the Blue Jays will continue to look to improve their pitching. Primarily, this will be achieved by signing additional free agents. They are now being linked to two new free agents, one of whom is Edwin Diaz.

Diaz spent the 2025 season with the New York Mets. As the closer, he recorded 28 saves in 31 opportunities. Only four home runs were scored off his pitches, with batters scoring 14 total runs in his 62 innings. He also recorded 98 strikeouts to go along with a 0.87 WHIP and a 1.63 ERA.

Toronto Blue Jays Linked to Edwin Diaz & Robert Suarez

Jon Heyman recently published a report that included some information on where things stand for the Blue Jays this offseason. The MLB insider touched on many things, primarily their needs on the mound.

“Their fine World Series staff, diminished by the free agency of 2025 postseason stalwarts Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt, two old buddies from Mets days, made a starter a necessity,” Heyman wrote for the New York Post on November 27, 2025.  “And they went for arguably the priciest guy on the market (Tatsuya Imai or Framber Valdez could possibly top him).”

“They’re also eying a top closer and are seen as a potentially serious player for Edwin Díaz, Robert Suarez, or one of the other prime back-end bullpen pieces.”

Blue Jays’ Interest in Diaz is Nothing New

The Blue Jays ‘ interest in Diaz is nothing new. A few weeks ago, a report stated that the two sides met.

“The Blue Jays, according to people briefed on their activity, met with Díaz’s agents from Wasserman at the general managers’ meetings,” Ken Rosenthal reported on November 14, 2025, for The Athletic. “That’s not necessarily a major development. This early in the offseason, teams express interest in pretty much every quality player. Toronto, though, is targeting high-leverage relief as well as starting pitching, and it’s signaling a willingness to both spend big and lose draft picks if necessary.”

“The Jays are open to sliding Hoffman to the eighth inning, and Hoffman almost certainly would accept such a move if the team acquired a more accomplished closer.”

Rosenthal then telegraphed that Toronto wanted to spend its money on a quality starter before turning to the bullpen.

“The rotation is the Jays’ bigger priority,” Rosenthal wrote. “They might prefer to spend the most heavily in free agency on a starter such as Framber Valdez, Dylan Cease, or Tatsuya Imai and go with a less expensive closer such as Devin Williams or Robert Suarez.”

“Mets people, though, were not surprised to learn of the Jays’ interest in Díaz. After what happened in the World Series, who would be?”

What’s the Deal With Robert Suarez?

Suarez is another veteran closer who is very talented at his craft. Unfortunately, he is older and has less MLB experience than Diaz.

In his four years, Suarez began as a setup man who transitioned into a closer. Last year, he earned 40 saves (first in the MLB) and threw 75 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings. Additionally, he finished the season with a 0.90 WHIP, a 2.97 ERA, and allowed six home runs.

Suarez can be a suitable option for the Blue Jays if they strike out on Diaz. And, as mentioned by Rosenthal, Devin Williams is still on the market.

It should be an entertaining few weeks before the calendar moves over to 2026. I wouldn’t bet against the Blue Jays making another move before Christmas.
