Coming off winning the American League and within one game of winning the 2025 World Series, the Toronto Blue Jays are moving like an organization that wants to be a title contender for the 2026 MLB season.
Although there are question marks on where Bo Bichette will continue his career, that hasn’t stopped Toronto from improving the team, such as adding Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce. Moreover, the free agent rumor is linking the AL East winners to free-agent hitter Kyle Tucker.
However, he might not be the only free-agent hitter on the Blue Jays’ radar, as Alex Bregman is now a name connected to Toronto. Former MLB pitcher C. J. Nitkowski explained why the Blue Jays are an ideal spot for Bregman over teams like the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, should Toronto replace Bichette’s bat with the veteran.
“I think Alex Bregman wants to go back to Boston,” Nitkowski said on the December 19 edition of Toronto Sports Rush. “That is clearly the top target. The Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers are back in on him just like they were a year ago, but that’s a tougher sell. Where the Blue Jays have an advantage, if this is real, compared to the Tigers and the Cubs, is proving they are willing to pour resources into the team to win going forward.”
Blue Jays Are an Attractive Destination for Free Agents
Moreover, Nitkowski noted that Toronto taking advantage of the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. window might make it a more attractive destination than other potential contenders who aren’t willing to commit the financial resources needed to win a World Series.
“[Bregman is] on the back end of his career, and this will likely be the last big contract he signs,” Nitkowski added. “The Blue Jays are doing that right now. The Cubs are not spending like that market should, and the Tigers do not have the resources to spend at that level. If they land Alex Bregman, the odds of bringing Tarik Skubal back are probably even lower. That’s a tough sell for a player at this stage of his career.”
MLB Insider Sees Blue Jays in on Alex Bregman
Much of the recent chatter surrounding the Blue Jays has centered on Bichette and Tucker. According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, Toronto is the only team capable of landing both players if a deal were to materialize.
Speaking on the Michael Kay Show, Passan floated Bregman’s name as a potential direction the Blue Jays could be heading.
“I don’t think that the Blue Jays are done. I think they’re going to get a big bat,” Passan said on the December 19th episode. “I’m not sure if that’s Kyle Tucker, or Alex Bregman, or Bo Bichette, or maybe multiple of them. But I think the Blue Jays right now are in a position where they are willing to spend.
“They feel they have a window here and they’re going to take advantage of Vladimir Guerrero’s prime years and the team that pushed the Dodgers to the precipice in the World Series last year.”
