Throughout the 2025 campaign, future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer hasn’t exactly been great. There have been parts throughout Scherzerâs career when one could argue that he’s not only a top 10 right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball history, but a top 10 arm in baseball history. That hasnât been the case for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Scherzer completely dominated hitters throughout his career and is only waiting to get to Cooperstown one day on the first ballot.Â
For now, however, the Blue Jays have some things to figure out with the veteran, including his future in Major League Baseball. If Scherzer decides to hang them up, it wouldn’t exactly be surprising, but it sounds like he still wants to pitch.Â
Despite that, some don’t believe that he’ll return to the Blue Jays, including Matthew Sookram of FanSided, who noted that it’s expected that heâll depart.
âNo matter how this season ends for the Blue Jays, 2026 will bring along a new set of challenges and Toronto will likely once again be looking to add to their starting rotation. Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer are expected to leave via free agency.Â
âWhile the Blue Jays do have some internal candidates that could compete for those roles, Alek Manoah, Trey Yesavage, Bowden Francis, Adam Macko, Jake Bloss and Rickey Tiedemann all come to mind (if healthy), but there’s something special about signing a big time free agent arm that could jump right to the top of your rotation,â he wrote.
Does Max Scherzer Want to Stay in Toronto?
For the Toronto Blue Jays, it’ll likely come down to what Scherzer could be looking for in free agency. If he wants a good bit of cash to continue to throw for the Blue Jays, it’s better to allow the starter with a 4.36 ERA throughout the 2025 campaign to walk.Â
The veteran has also dealt with his fair share of injuries for the Blue Jays, appearing in 74.1 innings throughout the campaign.Â
Regarding how much money Scherzer could land in free agency, Spotrac recently predicted him to land a one-year, $9.6 million deal.Â
If Scherzer gets less than $10 million, there will be teams around Major League Baseball interested in adding him. At this stage of his career, heâll likely be only interested in throwing for a contender, which is another factor teams will have to consider.Â
The Blue Jays have been a contender for much of the year, and look poised to make a deep run in October if everything goes as planned.Â
Is the Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer On the Way Out?
Recently, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com spoke about Scherzerâs chances of returning to the Toronto Blue Jays. According to the Blue Jays reporter, he only gave him a 30% chance for a reunion.Â
“Give me 30%. Give me a one-third-ish odds.”
“He likes Toronto. He likes the money, of course, and the Blue Jays still going to have money. And he wanted a shot to win. He’s not 31, he’s 41. And you’ve only got so many cracks at this left,” Matheson said.
There’s plenty that has to play out for the Blue Jays over the next few months, and of course, how Scherzer and the team play in the postseason will have an impact on that.Â
However, considering his age and some other factors, it might be a better idea to let him walk.
