As the MLB calendar churns closer to December, free agency is expected to heat up, with a few players already finalizing deals for either new teams or returning to the same team. The qualifying offer deadline is Tuesday this week, which is likely when some bigger names will decide on their next MLB organization. The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the top contenders in baseball that are expected to be active in the player market this offseason.
A recent prediction has the Blue Jays making a big splash for the Philadelphia Phillies’ top free agent pitcher, Ranger Suarez. The early reports suggest that the Phillies may be unable to retain Suarez this offseason, as he tests the open market for a lucrative extension.

Blue Jays Predicted to Sign Ranger Suarez to $110 Deal
Ranger Suarez is thought to be among the top starters on the market this winter. He and Framber Valdez top the southpaw options, and then other names like Tatsuya Imai and Dylan Cease are the top right-handers.
In a recent predictions piece by Bleacher Report, writer Tim Kelly predicts that Ranger Suarez will sign with the Toronto Blue Jays on a four-year, $110 million deal, with an opt-out included:
“Contract Prediction: Four years, $110 million with player opt out available after 2027. Team Prediction: Blue Jays”

Another prediction Kelly makes is that Suarez will wait to sign until closer to the 2026 season:
“Don’t be surprised if Ranger Suárez lingers on the market for some time this offseason. Make no mistake, there’s plenty to like about Suárez, whom agent Scott Boras refers to as “the Cooler”. He got that nickname because he’s thrived as both a starter and a reliever in the postseason, pitching to a 1.48 ERA across 42.2 career playoff innings.”

Ranger Suarez Has Been a Durable and Consistent Starter for Several Seasons
Ranger Suarez has made 20+ starts in each of the last four seasons. While he isn’t going to be a total workhorse and post close to 200 innings, his ERA has also steadily been around 3.50 since 2021.
In 157.1 innings in 2025, Suarez posted a 3.20 ERA and 151 strikeouts.
If the Blue Jays are serious about returning to the Fall Classic in 2026, they will have to be among baseball’s biggest spenders once again this offseason. Toronto’s front office has shown a strong willingness to commit to players financially, and signing Suarez could go a long way in helping their chances to repeat as AL East Champs.
Suarez was named an All-Star in 2024 and put together a 2025 campaign that also could have been worthy of a midsummer classic appearance. And for the Phillies, who already have a solid cast of starters, retaining Suarez seems unlikely, as his contract demands may ultimately be too high.
