The Toronto Blue Jays never stop making moves. They have been one of the MLB‘s busiest teams this winter. In addition to adding top-line pitching with Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Tyler Rogers, they have added several international free agents. Toronto’s depth signings have included Geovanny Planchart, Isay Veras, Hedbert Perez, Celwin Hurkmans, and Jorge Burgos.
What is happening with Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman will always be on the minds of Blue Jays fans. One depth signing could be a Bichette replacement in the near future. Additionally, the organization may focus on filling other positions while Tucker’s market plays out.
However, Toronto could have a real gem with their latest signing. He’s a versatile player with untapped power potential.
Toronto Blue Jays Sign Jorge Burgos
According to the Blue Jays’ transactions page, they signed a free agent on December 17, 2025. That was the same day that they traded Justin Bruihl to the Cleveland Guardians. The transaction page says that they signed CF Burgos to a minor-league contract.
His MLB profile page lists Burgos at 5-foot-10, 165 lbs. The 23-year-old played AA for the Akron RubberDucks, the AA affiliate of the Guardians.
In the 2025 season, he recorded 14 home runs and 73 RBIs in addition to 43 walks and 73 hits in 98 games.
Burgos Top Hitter in AA
Burgos was a solid hitter for the RubberDucks in 2025. He finished near the top of his team in several categories. He led his team in home runs and RBIs. Burgos was in the top five in several other stats, including slugging percentage (.386), DRC+ (110), and triples (3).
In 2025, he had the seventh-most RBIs in the entire league. This shows that he can hit balls in key situations. Sometimes, raw power isn’t the best approach at the plate, and a win means more than personal home runs.
Jorge Burgos Scouting Report
Burgos was considered a power sleeper during his last season with the Guardians organization.
According to a FanGraphs scouting report, “Burgos has plus lefty bat speed, and his swing is geared to get to all of his power. He hit 18 bombs last year but struck out nearly 30% of the time, which is too much for a poor 1B/OF defender.”
Another intriguing thing about the young slugger is his defensive versatility. Despite being listed by the Blue Jays as a CF, he spent the majority of the 2025 season as a first baseman. Burgos also spent time as an LF and RF.
That combination of defense and offense should excite Blue Jays fans.
One Trade’s Domino Effect
Recent reports indicate that the Blue Jays are big players for Bregman. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Toronto is heavily in the mix.
“Both the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks have emerged as legitimate suitors for Bregman, according to sources briefed on the discussions,” Rosenthal wrote on December 22, 2025. “Other clubs, including the Chicago Cubs, also are said to be involved.”
“Free agent Bo Bichette, who turns 28 in March, is four years younger than Bregman and capable of moving from shortstop to second or third. A trade for Arizona’s Ketel Marte or St. Louis’ Brendan Donovan also could provide a major upgrade at second.”
All of these things will have a domino effect.
If the Boston Red Sox, known suitors for Bichette, make a trade for Ketel Marte, that would clear things up. Adding Marte potentially takes them out of the running for both Bichette and Bregman. That would be great news for the Blue Jays.
Red Sox Focused on Bregman
According to another report, the Red Sox are focused on re-signing Bregman.
“The Red Sox are still pursuing another bat to add to their lineup, a second league source confirmed,” Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic wrote on December 22nd. “Re-signing Alex Bregman remains a priority. However, that task has become more difficult in recent days as Bregman’s market is heating up with Arizona and now Toronto in the mix. If Bregman signs with Toronto, the Red Sox figure to push harder for free-agent infielder Bo Bichette with the intent of playing him at second base.”
“The Red Sox are also in the mix for free agent third baseman Eugenio Suárez and have shown interest in Houston’s Isaac Paredes and Arizona’s Ketel Marte.”
The Red Sox have their hands in a lot of different pots. The market seems to depend on their next move. If they retain Bregman, it keeps the door open for a Bichette return.
Toronto Not Waiting For Tucker?
Not to leave Tucker out, but it appears that the Blue Jays may not be waiting on him to make a decision.
On Fair Territory, Rosenthal revealed that Toronto will focus on adding to its infield rather than its outfield.
“All these things are in play for the Blue Jays. I imagine Tucker and (Cody) Bellinger, to an extent, are as well. Their need, their greater need, is in the infield,” Rosenthal said on the December 22nd episode.
With all of these things swirling around, it’s only a matter of time until another shoe drops.
