The Toronto Blue Jays have one of the biggest decisions to make this offseason regarding Bo Bichette. The two-time All-Star is a free agent and easily the best shortstop on the market. However, there are alternative options, like the trade market, if the Blue Jays are unable to reach a deal with Bichette.
As with every MLB hot stove season, the rumors are swirling around from all angles, and a recent article by Bleacher Report has the Toronto Blue Jays as a leading contender for Washington Nationals All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams.

Should the Blue Jays Trade for CJ Abrams?
This depends solely on what happens with the Bo Bichette decision. It’s been a slow free agency trail thus far for Bichette this offseason, but there are only a handful of MLB teams that will be able to afford him.
There have been reports from various MLB analysts that the Nationals are actively listening to trade offers for CJ Abrams, so Bleacher Report went ahead and put together a few different trade packages that it would take to land Abrams. Here is what writer Kerry Miller wrote for the Blue Jays:
“Hypothetical Trade Package: Washington Nationals send SS CJ Abrams to Toronto Blue Jays for LHP Ricky Tiedemann, SS Arjun Nimmala, OF RJ Schreck and 3B/1B Charles McAdoo”

That’s a four-player deal to land Abrams, which may be a bit too much, but Toronto certainly has the trade capital for a meaningful trade like this.
If Toronto is unable to retain Bichette, their middle-infield options aren’t entirely strong with Addison Barger and Andres Jimenez.

What Would CJ Abrams Bring to Toronto?
Filling in the shoes of Bo Bichette would be extremely difficult, but CJ Abrams has been able to hold his own at the shortstop position.
In 2024, Abrams was named an All-Star and finished that season with 20 home runs, 31 stolen bases, and an OPS+ of 109.
He had a very similar season in 2025. Over 144 games this past season, Abrams hit .257 with 19 home runs, 35 doubles, and an OPS+ of 111. Bichette’s average was much higher in 2025 at .311, but Abrams has a comparable slugging power. Bichette hit 18 home runs and 44 doubles over 130+ games this season.
CJ Abrams doesn’t come with the best defense, but neither does Bo Bichette, so defensive ability should be thrown out the window in this trade equation.
According to BaseballReference.com, Abrams is projected to hit .256 next season with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs.
It will be interesting to see what kind of buzz Abrams continues to garner this offseason, and if Toronto could really make a run at him if they are unable to retain Bo Bichette.
