The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the most surprising teams in baseball this season. After winning 10 consecutive games, they sit in first place in the American League East, something not many saw coming. However, it is still going to be a tight race down the stretch between Toronto and its rivals, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
With the trade deadline just two weeks away, this is the perfect chance for the Blue Jays to be buyers and make necessary additions to their roster for the stretch run over the final two months of the season.
Minnesota Twins Could Ship Starter Joe Ryan
It has been reported that if the Minnesota Twins decide to be sellers, they will listen to offers on starting pitcher Joe Ryan. It will require a substantial offer, as Ryan is under control through the 2028 season, but he comes at a relatively low price. Named an All-Star this season, Ryan had a stellar first half of the season and would certainly help any rotation that he joins. He has logged 109.1 innings thus far and has a 2.72 ERA to go along with 121 strikeouts. He’s also been known over the last four seasons to be a guy who can consistently take the ball each fifth day. He has recorded over 135 innings in his last four seasons and is on pace to finish with 160+ this season, making him an attractive trade candidate.
For a team like the Toronto Blue Jays, which has aspirations of making a deep playoff run, acquiring a starter like Ryan makes perfect sense and would give Toronto one of the best rotations in the sport.
The deal would have to be substantial, but if Toronto decides they do want to be buyers and go all-in on this great season they are having, thinking about trading for Ryan seems like a good option.
Toronto Blue Jays Deadline Outlook
Pitching is at the top of the Toronto Blue Jays’ wish list in the waning weeks until the July 31st deadline.
Mark Polishuk of MLBTradeRumors.com provided some analysis on the Blue Jays’ rotation and where they need improvement.
“Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Chris Bassitt have been invaluable to the Blue Jays, as the steadiness and durability of the top three starters helped keep the pitching staff on track amidst some early chaos at the back end of the rotation. Minor league signing Eric Lauer has a 2.78 ERA over 55 innings, and his entry into the fourth starter’s spot was a key element of Toronto’s success over the last six weeks. Max Scherzer has pitched only 23 innings due to his ever-present thumb problems, and it remains to be seen whether or not Scherzer can remain healthy enough to contribute as a full-fledged starter or perhaps as a piggyback starter in front of a long reliever.”
Toronto is one of the more intriguing teams to keep an eye on over the next couple of weeks. If they make a big splash, it could propel them into being true American League contenders this season.
