Some believe that the Toronto Blue Jays could be aggressive at the trade deadline. The Blue Jays are playing great baseball as of late, putting themselves in a position to potentially win the American League East. At 48-38, theyâre tied with the New York Yankees in the AL East for first place. The Yankees and Blue Jays will have another game in this four-game set, as the Blue Jays have taken the first three.Â
If the Blue Jays continue to play this way, it should be all but guaranteed that they’ll make a slash at the deadline.
With that in mind, Bleacher Report recently linked them to a promising deal for Alex Bregman of the Boston Red Sox. However, they noted that while Bregman might be an excellent fit, it remains uncertain if the Boston Red Sox will be willing to send him to the American League East.Â
âThe Ernie Clement/Addison Barger platoon has been a fruitful one for the Blue Jays at third base, but this offense frankly needs another big bat before its World Series pursuit can be taken seriously. But as with the Yankees, it’s hard to imagine Boston sending Bregman to an AL East rival,â they wrote.
What Are the Blue Jaysâ Trade Deadline Plans?
The Toronto Blue Jays haven’t decided what they plan to do at the trade deadline, but recently, skipper John Schneider spoke about it. He added that last year was much different from what it is currently, but that Toronto is still a bit away from where it wants to be.
âLast year sucked,â Schneider said, per MLB.com. âIt was different. Weâre still a little bit away, but when you get around this time, guys get excited about it. We do a really good job of trying to improve our team. You look back at getting José [BerrÃos], getting Jordan Hicks, there are players over the years who have come in and helped. Itâs cool that weâre in a position right now to do that again. Looking at the veteran guys, too — [Chris] Bassitt, [Kevin] Gausman, Bo [Bichette], Vladdy [Guerrero Jr.], [Chad] Green — theyâre excited that weâre in this position.â
A Noted Area of Need
Regarding what the Toronto Blue Jays could look to do at the trade deadline, general manager Ross Atkins noted that the team could be interested in adding a right-handed bat.Â
Bregman, if he gets traded, would likely be the best right-handed bat available. He’s dealt with some injuries throughout the year for the Boston Red Sox, but when he’s been on the field and healthy, which hasn’t been the case since May 23, he was one of the better right-handed hitters in baseball.
âProbably on the run-prevention side more from a depth standpoint,â Atkins said. âIf we can score more, weâll look to do that. And adding a right-handed hitter to our team is something weâve been trying to do internally, and we have considered external alternatives as well. The run-prevention side is probably going to come from pitching with how good our defense has been.â
In 51 games, Bregman was hitting .299 with a 159 OPS+, driving in 35 and blasting 11 home runs.
