The Toronto Blue Jays could look to the trade market to replace Bo Bichette if he leaves in free agency.
Bichette is one of the top free agents available, and he has been linked to multiple teams. If he does sign elsewhere, it creates a hole at second base, assuming Andres Gimenez shifts to shortstop.
Blue Jays analyst Edward Eng of JaysJournal urges Toronto to trade for Brandon Lowe from the Tampa Bay Rays to fill the second base vacancy.
“As a long-time Blue Jays killer during his time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Brandon Lowe may not be the flashiest name out there, but he can still pack a punch when it comes to offense,” Eng wrote. “The two-time All-Star has spent his entire eight-year MLB career with the Rays, posting a lifetime .247 average and .807 OPS. When healthy, Lowe can average an elite 90 runs scored, 34 home runs and 97 RBIs over a full 162-game pace.
“However, the main caveat for the 31-year-old infielder is exactly that, his injury history and health. Over his eight years in the majors, Lowe has only managed to play more than 110 games twice. With a career-high 149 in 2021 and 134 just last season. Nevertheless, if he can put those injury issues officially behind him, Lowe can provide unexpected value as a valuable lefty in the Jays’ lineup.”
Lowe would be a nice fit at second base for the Blue Jays. His bat would help fill the void of Bichette. He’s also hit well in his career at the Rogers Centre, which is also a good sign.
Meanwhile, the cost to acquire Lowe also may not be too high, as it could be an outfielder whom Toronto has a surplus of and a mid-tier prospect.
Lowe’s Name Coming up in Trade Talks
Lowe is in the final year of his deal as he’s owed $11.5 million in 2026, which is why his name has come up in trade talks.
Given that Lowe is a pending free agent, Tampa Bay may look to get an asset back for him. MLB insider Jon Morosi said during the Winter Meetings that teams have asked the Rays about Lowe.
“Multiple second basemen are being discussed in trades across the industry tonight,” Morosi wrote on X. “Brandon Lowe’s name is a popular one; sources believe the chances of a deal involving him have increased this week.”
Lowe has spent his entire career with the Rays and is a two-time MLB All-Star, including being an All-Star in 2025. Last season, the second baseman hit .256 with 31 home runs and 83 RBIs.
Blue Jays Still Talking to Bichette
With Bichette still being a free agent, Toronto is still keeping tabs on him.
After the Blue Jays lost in Game 7 of the World Series, Bichette said he’d like to be back. Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins, meanwhile, praised Bichette at the Winter Meetings and said the sides are still talking.
“He’s a great player. Incredible impact on this organization. We wouldn’t be having this discussion about that momentum without him,” Atkins said. “Not just this year, but over the last 10.”
Bichette has spent his entire MLB career with the Blue Jays. He’s a two-time MLB All-Star who’s also led the AL in hits twice.
