Bo Nix Sends Message After Broncos’ Offensive Struggles vs. Jets

The Denver Broncos may have escaped with a 13-11 win over the New York Jets in London, but Bo Nix did not sugarcoat how poor the Broncos offensive performance was.

As Yahoo Sports noted, the second-year QB admitted after the game that the offense was out of sync for most of the afternoon:

“We weren’t in a very good rhythm at all,” Nix said. “First half, we were going quick, spreading the ball around, and getting them into softer coverages. In the second half, it felt like the opposite, a lot of heavy looks, a lot of loaded boxes, and just a complete lack of rhythm.”

The Broncos’ offense struggled behind an injury-depleted offensive line that was missing Ben Powers.

Their struggles were very apparent in the second half as Bo Nix did not have a single passing yard until midway through the fourth quarter.

Despite the struggles, Nix made a big play when it mattered as he completed a pass to Evan Engram late in the fourth quarter to help set up their go-ahead score.

“Thank goodness Evan got open on his man-to-man,” Nix added. “That drive, we finally found a little rhythm and spread the ball around enough to get points. It really felt like a tale of two halves.”

Broncos Offensive Struggles

After the game, head coach Sean Payton revealed how surprised he was with his team’s offensive struggles.

“I didn’t think we played well up front. Said ‘This was a game coming in, I thought we would be able to run the ball,” said Broncos coach Sean Payton.

The Broncos were unable to get their run game going as Denver finished with just 78 rushing yards as a team with 24 of those coming from Bo Nix.

Starting running back J.K. Dobbins only averaged 2.9 yards per carry.

The passing attack struggled as well as Nix was limited to just 174 yards through the air. Star wideout Courtland Sutton was a non-factor, finishing with only one reception for 17 yards.

Dominant Defense Bails Out Sluggish Offense

To make up for the Broncos offensive struggles, their defense played lights out.

The defense held Jets quarterback Justin Fields to only 45 passing yards and was sacked nine times. The Jets offense had only 82 yards in the entire game. These kinds of numbers are just unheard of in this day and age.

Nix understood just how impressive the Broncos defensive performance was:

“They turned it on, nine sacks is a lot of sacks,” Nix said. “That’s really good for our defense, still looking for turnovers. But sacks are pretty much like turnovers; they kill drives. Impressive, not shocked, but really impressive performance today by them. Great effort all around, really good job tackling in space and obviously a good job covering down the field, getting pressure on the quarterback.”

With the emergence of  linebacker Nik Bonitto, who added a sack to his season total of eight on the year, and last year’s DPOY Patrick Surtain, the Broncos are emerging as one of the best defenses in the NFL.

The Broncos have all the making of an elite team that can make a run at the Super Bowl, but in order for that to happen, Bo Nix and the Broncos offense has to play better than they did on Sunday in London.

The Broncos now turn their focus to the New York Giants, where Nix and the offense will look to clean things up and get back on track before heading back home.
