Boston Bruins Urged To Trade For Intriguing Rangers Prospect

The Boston Bruins have not embraced a complete rebuild quite yet. Boston is one of the prouder franchises in the NHL. Even after their miserable 2024-25 season, this is not an organization that believes in tearing things down to the studs. As a result, they are trying to retool the roster on the fly.

This process sees the team do two things. On one hand, they want to add veterans on short-term contracts who can produce well in the NHL this season. On the other hand, they are seeking to bolster their prospect pipeline with high-potential young players.

The Bruins added James Hagens in the 2025 NHL Draft back in June to give themselves a franchise cornerstone. However, they could use more depth in their prospect pipeline. And one NHL writer believes there’s an intriguing fit with a fellow Original Six team.

New York Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann is a former first-round draft pick. However, he has yet to truly get a chance to show what he can do. Michael DeRosa of The Hockey News believes the Bruins could give Othmann a needed change of scenery.

“Othmann has yet to become a full-time NHL player, recording two assists, 49 hits, and a plus-7 rating in 25 games over two seasons. Yet, when noting that he is still only 22 years old and has put up solid numbers in the AHL, the potential for him to break out is undoubtedly still there. Perhaps a trade to Boston could help him take that next step,” DeRosa wrote.

The idea of an Othmann trade is not outside the realm of possibility, either. New York has sent the 22-year-old to the AHL to begin the season. And his placement there has caused some teams to check in on his availability.

“Othmann was sent down to AHL Hartford after failing to make the NHL team, and, since that occurred, there’s been conversations with other clubs about his future. The Rangers have a lot on the wings and it simply may be that he needs a fresh start elsewhere,” Sportsnet’s NHL insider Elliotte Friedman wrote on Thursday.

Teams like the Bruins could certainly be interested. What the cost of a potential trade would be is still unknown. Furthermore, things could change between now and the March 6th NHL Trade Deadline. For now, though, Othamnn could be on the table in trade talks.

Does Othmann Fit With Bruins Organization?

The Bruins roster is currently in an interesting spot. Boston has a very experienced roster as things currently stand. But they also have some young players making an impact at the NHL level.

In terms of depth, Boston could use a bit more on the wing. Fraser Minten and Fabian Lysell are the team’s two top prospects. Both have the ability to play on the wing, as well. However, Minten is currently the team’s third-line center. And he may stick down the middle long term.

Outside of Lysell, though, Boston doesn’t have much in the way of high-potential wingers. They do have experienced wingers who are not long-term fits, though. The likes of Viktor Arvidsson, Tanner Jeannot, and Mikey Eyssimont are nearing the age of 30.

Othmann gives the Bruins a good 1-2 punch on the wings. His potential in the NHL is certainly up for debate. However, this sort of trade could be worth a flier for Boston early in the 2025-26 season.
