Boston Red Sox Predicted to Trade One of Top Offensive Players

MLB’s trade deadline season is upon us, and depending on how the Boston Red Sox finish out the month of June and how they play into July, they could have all eyes on them to make some deadline moves. Boston is playing better as of late, and is on the verge of taking consecutive series against the New York Yankees; however, they are still below .500 with a 35-36 record.

There have been rumblings of many teams being in on two Boston outfielders, Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu, as the deadline looms. The reason for this is that Boston finally called up top prospect Roman Anthony, and the outfield room is starting to get a bit crowded.

Red Sox Trade Prediction

In a recent article by Bleacher Report, writer Tim Kelly gives 10 predictions ahead of the trade deadline, and one of the surprises is the Red Sox trading either Duran or Abreu.

Here is what Kelly had to say:

“What’s more likely is that either Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu is moved. And there will be plenty of interest in both. Duran has already been reported as a piece of interest to the San Diego Padres by Dennis Lin of The Athletic. The 28-year-old led baseball in both doubles and triples last season, and again finds himself in the lead in terms of triples this season.

“What the Red Sox—and any potential suitors—will have to decide is whether they think he can ever replicate the 6.7 WAR he posted last year, or if he’s more of a three- or four-win player who had one superstar season. The 2024 version of Duran is the type of player who is untouchable. But his value right now might be at its peak because he hasn’t yet conclusively proved last year was an outlier, although he isn’t performing at that same level overall again.”

Kelly also made the point that it took Abreu going to the Injured List with an Oblique strain for Anthony to finally get called up, but thinking long-term, it makes sense for them to move on from one of their many outfielders and try to acquire another frontline starter or middle infielder in return.

What Team May Be Interested in Duran or Abreu?

Well, as pointed out by Kelly, the San Diego Padres have already been linked with Duran in the early going of this trade rumor season, but many teams could use outfield help. The Los Angeles Dodgers are a name to keep an eye out for, as their left fielder, Michael Conforto, has been struggling mightily. The Philadelphia Phillies also come to mind as it seems they’re in search of a solid offensive center fielder. As for Abreu, the Milwaukee Brewers seem like a good fit, and are another potential team that could use outfield help.

Duran has been an everyday player for the Boston Red Sox and is having a sound offensive season with 30 extra-base hits in 70 games, including seven triples. Abreu has been more of a power threat with 13 home runs on the season, and is slugging .471. The likelihood of a deal for either player depends again on how well Boston is playing in July.
