The first massive move has just taken place at MLB’s Winter Meetings. After many speculative reports of who was in the race for Kyle Schwarber/who had interest in him, the Philadelphia Phillies silenced all those reports on Tuesday by retaining their MVP runner-up.
According to Jeff Passan, the Phillies are finalizing a five-year, $150 million deal with star slugger Kyle Schwarber. The $30 million AAV for a “DH” is the biggest average annual salary handed out to a player who just hits. Schwarber is entering his age-33 season, and the only doubt about what his contract may have looked like depended on how many years a team was willing to commit to him.

Philles Retain Their Guy in Kyle Schwarber
Kyle Schwarber is fresh off his best season as a big leaguer, and that’s saying a lot for how many 40-home-run seasons he has. He put it all together in 2025 by hitting 56 home runs, driving in 132 runs, and posting a 150 OPS+.
During his four seasons with the Phillies, Schwarber has 187 home runs and 434 RBIs. A mega-deal for Schwarber, and the first big move from the Phillies front office this offseason. The deal will keep Schwarber in Philadelphia through 2031.

Schwarber has seven MLB seasons of 30+ home runs, and four straight while being with the Phillies. In 2022 and 2023, he had back-to-back seasons of 45+ home runs and is revered as one of MLB’s top power threats.
He’s been named to three All-Star teams and has a Silver Slugger award. You may be wondering why he doesn’t have more SS awards, and it’s because he has to compete with Shohei Ohtani at the DH position in the NL, or else he’d easily have more under his belt.

What’s Next for the Phillies?
Retaining Kyle Schwarber will definitely be the biggest move the Phillies make this offseason, but it was expected that Dave Dombrowski and the rest of the front office would open up the checkbook and sign Schwarber, or at least make him an offer he couldn’t resist, which is exactly what sounds like happened.
But what’s next for the Phils? They still have a hole in the outfield and a decision to make regarding Ranger Suarez, who is a free agent.
The trade market is wide open at this time of year, and expect the Phillies to utilize it in some capacity before the start of the 2026 season.
The Phillies were eliminated by the Dodgers in the NLDS last season, which surely left a sour taste in their mouth, but this offseason could be critical in getting over the hump next season and bringing a World Series title back to Philadelphia. They will certainly still be considered one of the favorites in the NL after this move.
