The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the surging teams in the National League. Backed by one of the best rotations in all of baseball, Milwaukee was winners of seven straight headed into the All-Star break, and has made it a really close division race in the National League Central, which has given a lot of insiders a newfound belief that they can be a top NL contender in August and September.
With just two weeks left until MLB’s trade deadline, the Brewers have a chance to add to an already good roster and sure up some of their position spots. Their biggest need is the left side of the infield.
Brewers Trade Proposal Lands Eugenio Suárez From Diamondbacks
In this massive blockbuster trade idea, it is the Milwaukee Brewers who land Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are reportedly shopping their top assets. Suárez is arguably the hottest commodity on the trade market, and for a team like Milwaukee, which needs infield power, he would fit in perfectly.
Here’s what MLB.com’s Thomas Harrigan had to say about the Brewers’ deadline plans:
“As buyers, the Brewers are likely to prioritize adding a bat — Andrew Vaughn has filled in admirably at first base since Rhys Hoskins went down with a sprained left thumb, but the Crew is in need of more pop in its lineup. Milwaukee has the eighth-fewest home runs in the Majors, and the left side of its infield in particular has been a black hole. Only the Pirates have gotten a lower combined wRC+ from their shortstops and third basemen than the Brewers (67).”
Suárez was named an All-Star for the second time in his career this season and is tearing the cover off the ball. He has 31 home runs, 78 home runs, and an OPS nearing .900. Oh, and his WRC+ is 142. That would be quite the upgrade for the Brew Crew, and he would certainly slot in nicely in the middle of their order.
The Diamondbacks are likely in sell mode, and it will be a total bidding war for Suárez, who is surely going to have a lot of teams in on him. It will likely come down to the team that can offer the Diamondbacks the most capital as a return.
So, What Would Suárez Cost Milwaukee?
Well, considering Suárez is set to be a free agent at year’s end, it wouldn’t cost the Milwaukee Brewers a complete arm and a leg, but the Arizona Diamondbacks are certainly going to try and get a haul. In a deal like this, a good return package would include starter Quinn Priester, Jake Bauers, and catching prospect Jeferson Quero. A three-player deal for a potential rental player. And even that might not be enough. However, Priester has put up a solid season since being traded from the Boston Red Sox. He has a 3.55 ERA in 88.2 innings and has been able to take the ball each fifth day.
Milwaukee can certainly afford to give up a starter, though with how deep their rotation is, and if they were to acquire Suárez, that’d allow for Caleb Durbin to move over to short, as he’s been a little more productive than Joey Ortiz.
If the Brewers make a huge splash like this and win the Suárez sweepstakes, they would immediately be taken series as a potential NL Pennant-winning club.
