The Milwaukee Brewers are promoting a name many fans may have forgotten — but one who’s quickly forcing his way back into the spotlight.
Anthony Seigler, a former New York Yankees first-round pick (23rd overall in the 2018 MLB Draft), is being called up to the Major Leagues, according to Francys Romero on X, formerly Twitter.
Seigler, now 26, signed a minor league deal with the Brewers this past offseason with little fanfare, following several underwhelming years in the Yankees’ system. But he’s completely rewritten the narrative in Triple-A Nashville this season.
In 62 games, Seigler has slashed .278/.416/.469 with 7 home runs, 35 RBI, 43 runs, and 20 stolen bases. His excellent on-base percentage (.416) and plate discipline have made him a standout, and his underlying metrics — including hard-hit rate, barrel percentage, and exit velocity — suggest his success is no fluke.
Seigler’s Versatile Skill Set For Brewers
Beyond the bat, Seigler brings tremendous positional flexibility. Primarily a catcher throughout his career, he’s also logged time at second base and recently began playing third base. This versatility makes him an ideal utility man for the Brewers, especially as they battle injuries and look to maintain their spot atop the NL Central.
Adding another layer of intrigue, Seigler is known as one of the rare ambidextrous athletes in pro baseball — a career switch-hitter and even an ambidextrous thrower during his high school days. However, this season he’s ditched switch-hitting after hitting just .097 right-handed, and has gone lefty-only, even against left-handed pitching — and it’s working.
While the team has not yet made an official roster move, the likely corresponding transaction could involve catcher William Contreras, who’s been playing through a lingering finger injury. Contreras, one of the Brewers’ core players, has seen his offensive numbers dip in recent weeks, with a 103 OPS+, his lowest since joining Milwaukee.
What’s Next?
Placing Contreras on the injured list (IL) to let him heal fully could open the door for Seigler to make his long-awaited MLB debut.
Other potential options for a roster move include outfielder Daz Cameron or infielder Andruw Monasterio, though both seem less likely to be affected than Contreras given the positional overlap.
For fantasy baseball players, Seigler isn’t an immediate must-add outside of deep roto or NL-only formats, but his unique blend of speed, on-base skills, and position eligibility makes him a name to watch closely. If he gets regular at-bats, especially in a run-producing lineup, he could have sneaky upside down the stretch.
From a pure baseball standpoint, this is a remarkable story of perseverance. Seigler was widely viewed as a bust after struggling with injuries and inconsistency in the Yankees system. But now, with his tools finally translating and a new team giving him a chance, he’s a potential impact depth piece for a contender.
Seigler has earned this opportunity. His ability to catch, play the infield, get on base, and run makes him a valuable asset to a Brewers team with playoff aspirations. Fans in Milwaukee — and fantasy managers looking for upside — should keep a close eye on Seigler as he makes his MLB debut.
