On Sunday morning, the Milwaukee Brewers announced they had placed right-handed starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski on the 15-day injured list with a left tibia contusion.
Misiorowski was supposed to start Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals, and right-hander Logan Henderson has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville to replace the 2025 All-Star.
On Monday against the Chicago Cubs, Misiorowski took a line drive to the shin off the bat of designated hitter Seiya Suzuki. The rookie remained in the game and pitched three additional innings, finishing with 80 pitches in the 8-4 win. As one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball, Misiorowski’s injury is cause for concern for the Brewers.
Misiorowski’s Thriving Season
Before his injury, Misiorowski blew opposing batters away with a fastball that averaged 99.3 mph. In seven starts, the 23-year-old went 4-1 with a 2.70, 0.960 WHIP, and recorded 47 strikeouts in 33.1 innings.
He made just five starts in the Major Leagues before receiving an All-Star nod as an injury replacement. MLB’s decision to select Misiorowski was met with confusion and anger from several players around the league and fans. Despite that, some of Misiorowski’s competitors from around the league spoke out about how impressive the youngster’s stuff is.
âThat was super impressive,â Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw told MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy after facing off against Misiorowski on July 8. âThat was unbelievable. It was really special. I mean, everything. Obviously the velo, but heâs got four pitches, commands the ball and made it — I mean, I donât know how you hit that, honestly.â
Kershaw told reporters before the game that he was unaware of Misiorowski as a prospect. That game, the youngster outpitched the future Hall of Famer as he struck out 12 batters in six innings. Misiorowski allowed one run, a leadoff homer in the top of the first to Shohei Ohtani.
“I know him [Misiorowski] now, huh?â Kershaw told McCalvy after the game.
How Misiorowski’s Injury Affects Brewers
Before the Milwaukee Brewers placed Misiorowski on the 15-day injured list, they watched a few of their other top performers go down with injury, too.
Outfielder Jackson Chourio is on the injured list with a hamstring strain, and Sal Frelick left Saturday’s game against the Washington Nationals with knee soreness. At the trade deadline, they acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Tampa Bay Rays and relief pitcher Shelby Miller from the Arizona Diamondbacks. They dealt starter Nestor Cortes to the San Diego Padres.
While Misiorowski is out, the Brewers’ rotation will consist of some combination of Freddy Peralta, Quinn Priester, Jose Quintana, and Brandon Woodruff.
Henderson, replacing Misiorowski in today’s game against the Nationals, posted an impressive 1.71 ERA and 35.8 percent strikeout rate in his first four Major League starts, including a six-inning, nine strikeout performance in his MLB debut on April 20 against the Athletics.
The Brewers lead the Chicago Cubs by two games in the NL Central, and the anticipation is that the division race will come down to the wire. The rivals meet for five games later this month at Wrigley Field, and Milwaukee’s manager Pat Murphy and Misiorowski’s teammates probably hope he’s recovered from his injury by then.
