The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball. The Brewers are the winners of their last six games, and they are in a tight race with the Chicago Cubs as MLB’s season heads into the final months. Milwaukee can add to an already scrappy roster with the trade deadline just a few weeks away. The Brewers lack a true star, but they do all the little things right and have a great manager in Pat Murphy.
Milwaukee has one of the best starting rotations in baseball, with Freddy Peralta and Jacob Misiorowski, and the return of Brandon Woodruff. However, they lack a true power bat with Rhys Hoskins on the Injured List.
Blockbuster Trade Idea Sends Wilyer Abreu to Milwaukee
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has been the subject of many trade rumors throughout this season. Boston is also one of/if not the hottest, teams in baseball headed into the All-Star break, but they have a true logjam in the outfield. Jarren Duran has also been linked to a few teams in a possible trade.
In this recent trade idea, the Red Sox trade 18 home run slugger Wilyer Abreu to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Nick Mears and a fifth-ranked Prospect, Jeferson Quero.
Mears is having a stellar season for the Milwaukee Brewers, but he’s the glue that makes this potential deal get done. Abreu is having a career season with Boston, which would likely cost a formidable arm like Mears. The 28-year-old Mears has a 2.41 ERA in 37.1 innings this season, with 31 strikeouts and a WHIP under 1.
Abreu’s Power is What the Brewers Lineup Needs.
Abreu is putting together an impressive power season so far in 2025. He has 18 home runs and 52 RBIs in 83 games. He’s also slugging near .500, but Abreu would slot perfectly in left field for the Milwaukee Brewers and allow Christian Yelich to be a full-time designated hitter. The Brewers have made themselves a real playoff threat, and the key in the postseason is hitting home runs and having a lockdown bullpen.
Milwaukee already has a lockdown bullpen with arms like Abner Uribe and lefty Jared Koenig. However, adding another power bat like Abreu would give the Brewers a real shot at running down the Chicago Cubs for the division lead.
What is unclear at this point is if the Red Sox will make Abreu available, but Boston is likely to be active at the deadline, and their top need is pitching. Closer Aroldis Chapman has been a shutdown arm, and for the most part Boston’s bullpen has not been the issue. However, high-leverage relievers are so imperative down the stretch, and adding a guy like Mears would round out the Red Sox bullpen really nicely.
Expect both the Brewers and the Red Sox to make a couple of notable moves as the July 31st deadline looms, and it could be either Mears or Abreu who are moved to help balance each individual roster. Both team’s have to believe they have a real shot at making a deep October run.
