When the Dallas Cowboys traded for George Pickens, it wasn’t as easy as getting an above-average wide receiver for a third and fifth-round pick. While the Cowboys got a very good player for a decent price, Pickens has had his fair share of issues in the NFL. From arguing with referees to teammates, the Cowboys took a risk.
In the early stages of the season, it sounds like everyone involved in the Cowboys has been ecstatic about what they’ve seen out of Pickens. From top to bottom, he seems to be doing what he’s expected to.
Well, maybe not everything.
“Schottenheimer has been pleased by what heâs seen from Pickens since the trade. He said before Dallas sent a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Steelers in exchange for Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick, that he made calls to find out more about the former Georgia standout,” Jon Machota of The Athletic wrote.
Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer Talks George Pickens
What exactly did Brian Schottenheimer hear from some of the people he called, attempting to get as much information as possible for the Dallas Cowboys?
âDifferent things,â Schottenheimer said. âHow much he loved football, that he loves to play the game. You might have to deal with him being late occasionally and some things like that, which sometimes we all oversleep. But for the most part it was all positive. The people that we spoke to in and around the league, in Pittsburgh and at Georgia, they were very honest.
âWhether itâs good or bad information, you do your homework and thatâs part of the process. Thatâs not the only process. The minute I sat down with George Pickens in my office, and we shot some hoops, it was very clear to me, this guy was fired up to be a Dallas Cowboy and excited to help us go win games.â
Does George Pickens Still Need to Improve Off the Field?
Later in the article, Schottenheimer was asked if Pickens has been late to anything yet, to which he responded with “no comment.” It’s possible that Pickens could be showing up late to things, or has once, but saying “no comment” doesn’t bring much confidence.
While Pickens has played well for the Dallas Cowboys, he needs to be on his best behavior this year. It’s important that he shows up, plays well, and does what’s needed.
“Thereâs plenty of incentive for Pickens to be at his best this season. The biggest being that heâs in the final year of his contract. But also to show that heâs grown from his experiences in Pittsburgh and he should be mentioned with the gameâs best wide receivers,” Machota wrote.
Showing up late to practice is inexcusable if that’s what happened.
However, Pickens is coming off a game in which he completely turned around the Cowboys‘ season. To show that he’s a WR1, Pickens not only will have the luxury of getting paid but also earn trust in his teammates.
It’ll be interesting to see if anything happens, if he was late, but it doesn’t sound like it’s been too much of an issue. Nonetheless, given his past, it’s something to monitor.
