The Dallas Cowboys are reaching a breaking point. After being dominated 44-24 by the Denver Broncos, head coach Brian Schottenheimer made it clear that the performance was unacceptable and that major changes are on the horizon. Now sitting at 3-4-1, Dallas faces a critical stretch that will determine if their season can be saved — starting with a must-win matchup against the Arizona Cardinals before the bye week.
Brian Schottenheimer Calls Cowboys’ Loss to Broncos ‘Unacceptable’
The Cowboys’ 44-24 loss to the Broncos left Schottenheimer furious and determined to make changes. After dropping their eighth straight game to Denver since 1995, Schottenheimer didn’t hold back when asked if any player or coach met the team’s standard.
“Not really,” he said, via the team’s official website. “I don’t think anyone coached well, either.”
The Cowboys’ struggles were widespread. Penalties, poor execution, and questionable play calls plagued both sides of the ball. A red-zone failure early in the game set the tone when Dallas settled for a field goal from the Broncos’ three-yard line. Even with an interception by cornerback Trikweze Bridges on the opening drive, the team couldn’t capitalize.
Schottenheimer made it clear that accountability applies to everyone. “No one is happy with the way we performed,” he said. “It’s not acceptable. It’s not good enough. The staff and the players are aware the standard was not met.”
Brian Schottenheimer Promises ‘Bigger Changes’ Ahead
Schottenheimer confirmed that “bigger changes” are coming after the team’s bye week. While immediate adjustments will be made for the upcoming game against the Cardinals, the more significant overhauls will take place once the team has time to regroup.
“There’s always reasons to change, and there will be change,” he said. “We’ve already had meetings and talked about those changes. We’re in the mode right now of a one-game season.”
He added that the bye week would be used for deeper evaluation: “Bigger changes to our style will happen over the bye week. That’s when we get a chance to look back and say, ‘What were those issues, and did we get them corrected? No? Then we need to do this and that.’”
The Cowboys’ defense continues to be a major concern, ranking last in the league after allowing Denver’s Bo Nix to rack up 268 total yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone. The inconsistency has forced quarterback Dak Prescott and the offense to play near-perfect football to stay competitive — a formula that’s simply not sustainable.
Dak Prescott: ‘Forget a Trade — Do More’
Prescott echoed his coach’s frustration after the game, calling the team’s performance “frustrating” and urging players to stop making excuses. “I’m surprised, frustrated — what we’re capable of doing didn’t really ever get going,” he said.
When asked if a trade before the November 4 deadline could fix the team’s problems, Prescott dismissed the idea and challenged his teammates to take ownership instead.
“We’ve got to be better in everything we do,” he said. “Getting a trade takes opportunities and plays away from somebody else. Forget a trade. Do more. Shut that talk up, whether it’s offense or defense. Step up and shut the talk up.”
