British No.1 Jack Draper recorded a remarkable 7-6 6-3 win over Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the last 16 at Queen’s Club on Thursday.

World No.31 Draper has been in fine form with the 22-year-old impressively clinching his first title on the ATP Tour at the Stuttgart Open on Sunday.

He’s now looking to make it two titles in a row as he prepares to face American world No.13 Tommy Paul – who is seeded fifth at Queen’s – in the last eight.

Draper has huge ambitions in tennis and he told Metro.co.uk at the end of 2023 that he firmly has his sights on landing the Wimbledon title later in his career.

The British star’s victory over world No.2 Alcaraz – tipped to become the next dominant force in the sport – is one of the biggest wins of his career as he looks to become the nation’s first champion at Queen’s since Andy Murray in 2016.

After securing the victory, Draper leapt up and threw his hands into the air before flinging the sweatbands from his wrists into the crowd.

‘It was a really tough match I knew coming out here that Carlos is the defending champion, he won Wimbledon, he’s an amazing talent,’ Draper said.

‘I knew I had to come out here and play really well, and luckily I did that.’

Former professional and tennis commentator Andrew Castle told the BBC: ‘You don’t get to the ranking Draper has got to (world No.31) without earning that position.

‘I remember Andy Murray here in 2005, and it is reminiscent of that. I think Jack can go a long way.

‘It’s tempting to overhype things but if you can beat a reigning champion, a genuine superstar, you can get excited. This is a moment of arrival.’

Former British No.1 Annabel Croft added: ‘It is hard not to be impressed with that performance. It was mesmerising.

‘What was so impressive was his composure. He was incredibly focused from point number one and he really took his game and his weapons to his opponent.’
