Over the offseason, the San Francisco 49ers committed to Brock Purdy long-term. On May 16, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the quarterback and the Niners agreed to a five-year, $265 million deal, including $181 million in guaranteed money.
The 49ers will ride with Purdy for the foreseeable future as the signal caller and the team look for a bounce-back season in 2025. Nonetheless, the 25-year-old recently received an interesting comparison from a former Seattle Seahawks running back.
During an appearance on 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs,“ Robert Turbin compared Purdy to a former 49ers quarterback, which might worry some fans considering their stance on the player during his time in the Bay Area.
“49ers fans may not want to hear this, but I think Brock Purdy is very similar to Jimmy Garoppolo,“ Turbin said. “… Purdy is clearly a better player, but he brings stability to the Niners in the way Garoppolo did.”
Brock Purdy Has the 49ers’ Faith
At one point, Garoppolo also had the backing of the organization. Moreover, the veteran quarterback also saw success as the 49ers reached the Super Bowl in 2020. As a result, a Garoppolo comparison shouldn’t feel negative.
In an article published on May 21 by CBS News San Francisco, 49ers general manager John Lynch stated that the organization is backing Purdy as the right quarterback to lead them.
Drafted by the 49ers with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former “Mr. Irrelevant“ quickly proved himself by leading the team to the NFC Championship Game as a rookie and then to Super Bowl 58 the following season.
“Brock is a tremendous leader and a fantastic representative for the 49ers organization, and we are ecstatic to get this deal done,“ Lynch said.
“When we took him with the last pick in the draft, we knew he had potential to succeed in this league, but we had no idea how special of a player he would become. He has played at an exceptionally high level since taking over the starting job, and we look forward to seeing him continue to lead this team for years to come.”
While many want to debate whether the talent around him or the quarterback has led to this success, the truth is that Purdy has had success with the 49ers. As a result, San Francisco’s front office feel that Purdy has played a significant role, which led to the contract extension.
Brock Purdy’s Individual Success in San Francisco
After stepping in as the starting quarterback in Week 14 of the 2022 season, Purdy immediately made history. He rattled off 10 straight wins to begin his career, tying for the second-most victories ever by a quarterback to open an NFL career.
Furthermore, Purdy would proceed to set several league marks early on. He owns the record for the most games in a player’s first three seasons with two or more passing touchdowns and a passer rating of 115.0 or higher (15). Moreover, Purdy holds the NFL records for the most games with a passer rating of 120.0, 130.0, and 140.0 or better during that span.
His success continued in 2023, when he rewrote the 49ers’ record book. Purdy set single-season franchise highs with 4,280 passing yards and a 113.0 passer rating, the best among all quarterbacks in the league that year.
