Headed into a Week 18 home game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Denver Broncos not only have the No. 1 seed and the AFC West Division title on the line, they also have some franchise history to play for.
Sitting at 13-3 overall, the Broncos can tie the 1998 team for the most regular-season wins in franchise history with a 14th win. That team went 14-2 and won the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year.
Still, even with all of that hanging in the balance, not everyone is convinced the Broncos are legit. Especially not after struggling to pull off a 20-13 win over the lowly Kansas City Chiefs in Week 17 in which the Broncos needed more fourth quarter heroics from quarterback Bo Nix to beat third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun.
“The Denver Broncos almost lost to: 2-13 NYG, 3-12 NYJ, 2-13 LVR, 4-12 WAS, ‘Chris Oladokun Chiefs’ … ” ESPN’s Zhain Dhanani wrote on X. “Combined margin of victory of 14 in those 5 games. Are the 2025 Denver Broncos the worst 3 loss team in NFL History?”
It was also the first time the Broncos swept the Chiefs in the regular season since 2014.
“The Broncos’ commitment to playing down to their opponent is awe-inspiring and ridiculously infuriating,” Let’s Talk Broncos’ Zach Segars wrote on X.
History Says 14-Win Teams Don’t Always Deliver
One quick look at NFL history shows us the odds don’t always favor 14-win teams — of the 23 times in the Super Bowl era that teams have finished with 14 wins, only 9 have ended the season with a Super Bowl win, according to Champs and Chumps.
Of those 23 teams, 6 went on to lose in the Super Bowl.
“Broncos have to be the worst 13 win team ever,” The Bills Guys wrote on their official X account.
Denver Defenders Point to Nix’s Historic Start
There’s the flip side of the argument, where the Broncos could very well be doing something historic this season and their fans point to their elite defense and second-year quarterback Bo Nix as reasons why they could make a run and win the Super Bowl for the fourth time in franchise history.
Nix was the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft — the last of 6 quarterbacks taken in the first round — and has led the Broncos to playoff appearances in each of his first 2 seasons following a 9-year playoff drought.
He’s the only quarterback of that group to make the playoffs the last 2 years.
“Bo Nix is THE ONLY QB in NFL history in his first two seasons to record: 20+ wins 7,500+ pass yards 50+ pass TD,” Sleeper Broncos wrote on its official X account. “While everyone keeps hating on him, he continues to rack up milestones and records.”
“Bo Nix wasn’t perfect by any standard … but the clutch gene is undeniable,” former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel wrote on X. “Broncos about to go 11-2 in one score games & more often than not, Nix is the reason.”
“Bo Nix has joined Peyton Manning and Justin Herbert as the only QBs in NFL history to have 3,500 passing yards and 25 passing TDs in each of their first two seasons in the NFL,” DNVR’s Zac Stevens wrote on X.
