Broncos Dish Out Surprise Concerning Update On WR’s Playing Status

The Denver Broncos received some good news on Friday, when Pro Bowl tight end, Evan Engram, announced that he would be good to go for Monday night’s game hosting the Cincinnati Bengals.

However, it looks like head coach, Sean Payton, could still be without a fully-healthy offensive arsenal, as third year wideout, Marvin Mims Jr. is now questionable to play in week 4, per 9 News’ Mike Klis.

“Uh oh.” Mike Klis posted on X on Saturday afternoon, “Broncos WR/returner Marvin Mims Jr., not on injury report all week, showed up today with hip and is listed as questionable for game Monday vs. Bengals.”

Having seemed all ready to play against Cincinnati throughout practice this past week, it seems that Mims is being bothered by a hip injury to the extent that his participation in the prime-time game two days away has now been cast into doubt.

By contract, none of the other players dealing with issues this past week, including John Franklin-Myers, who was limited in practice on Thursday as he too dealt with a hip injury, have been listed as “questionable” by the organization.

What Does The The Broncos’ Receiving Corps Look Like To Start The Season?

Mims’ impact early on has been diminished in part by the emergence of Troy Franklin, who has turned into the 1b receiving option for Bo Nix, behind veteran Pro Bowler, Courtland Sutton.

The second year wideout leads the team in receptions with 14, and only trails Sutton in total receiving yards, with 141 to Sutton’s 185.

Mims is currently the third option on the team, and also #3 in receiving yards. But neither of which are by much. Veteran receiver and former UDFA, Trent Sherfield Sr., has begun to eat into Marvin’s share of snaps.

Whilst Mims started the season playing over 50% of offensive snaps in week 1, that total got marked down to 36% and 44% in weeks 2 and 3. Indeed, at present Mims’ snaps on offense almost exactly mirror Sherfield’s percentage wise, with rookie Pat Bryant pulling up the rear with around 1/4 of offensive snaps per game.

What Will Denver Miss If Mims Does Not Play?

Mims brings production both on special teams as a returner, and also on the field as a wide receiver.

Despite his second round pedigree, the Oklahoma alum has not quite managed to turn himself into a clear starting option. Coming out of college, it was clear that Mims would most likely operate as a primarily out of the slot.

Slot receivers don’t often get as much production as perimeter wideouts, but there are still a number of very productive players that have historically played on the interior – see multiple time Super Bowl champion, Julian Edelman.

So the Broncos and Mims likely won’t be thrilled with his combined production of 880 yards in his first two seasons. And 40 yards in his three games to start 2025 also won’t have exactly cemented himself in Payton’s eyes as one of team’s stars for the future.

But he does add another athletic, nimble option inside – and his six touchdowns in 2024 demonstrated a keen nose for the end zone – so he will be missed if he is unable to contribute come Monday night.
