Broncos Get Major Update On All-Pro’s Injury Timeline

Although the Denver Broncos‘ defense conceded 24 points to what has been one of the league’s more potent offenses in the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, the 44 put up by Bo Nix and co. secured them a 20-point win.

This result will keep them in top spot regardless of what happens between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Commanders, who face off on Monday evening, and increases Denver’s impressive win-streak to five in a row – having seen off challenges from the Jets, Giants, Eagles and Bengals over the past month and more.

But Pat Surtain II, who wrestled with some injury problems in the first half before ultimately being ruled out for the second, looks to have suffered a pectoral injury.

Pat Surtain II Gets Approximate Injury Timeline From Report

Although there has been no official confirmation from the team on the exact extent of the problem, Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reports that the former Defensive Player of the Year will miss approximately 4-6 weeks.

“Sources: Broncos star CB Patrick Surtain II is dealing with a pectoral injury and is expected to miss 4–6 weeks.” Schultz posted to X on Monday. “No surgery is needed, but I’m told the reigning Defensive Player of the Year will get a second opinion this week to confirm the timeline.”

The good news, as Schultz points out, is that Surtain’s injury remains containable, considering he was not mandated to face surgery, which would have severely delayed his recovery.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport had a slightly different outlook, claiming that Surtain is “week-to-week”, although he could end up on injured reserve.

Broncos CB Patrick Surtain II, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, suffered a pec strain in the win over the Cowboys, per me and Tom Pelissero.” Rapoport wrote on Monday.
“He’s considered week-to-week and he could land on IR. But solid news.”

Although Rapoport and Schultz differ on the specificity of the timelines, it seems that both reports converge to a similar type of time on the sidelines.

If Schultz is correct, and the team expect him out from 4-6 weeks, that would immediately lend itself to Surtain landing on short-term IR, which would keep him out for a minimum of four weeks, but also opens up a spot on the 53-man active roster in the meantime.

Broncos Seeking A Second Opinion On Surtain Before Making Roster Moves

However, the lack of action on the Broncos’ front comes – as Schultz notes in his post – the move to get a second opinion, a point emphasized by DNVR Sports’ Zac Stevens in a post on X after Schultz and Rapoport’s.

“Pat Surtain II and the Broncos are still evaluating the extent of his injury and a timeline is up in the air as more opinions are gathered, talking to sources.” Stevens wrote. “[Jordan Schultz]
reports Surtain will miss 4-6 weeks, if that’s the case, he will be back after the Broncos’ Week 12 Bye Week or after the Broncos’ Week 14 game against the Raiders.
Big blow for the Broncos and the Defensive Player of the Year.”
The timeline – as Stevens notes – is far from being set in stone yet, which is likely why Rapoport refrained from giving an exact set of dates. Given the context, it seems that 4-6 weeks feels approximately like the span of time Broncos fans should expect the man who has been their top defensive player over the past half decade to be out for.
