It’s been a rough year on the golf course for Brooks Koepka, but it pales in comparison to the heartbreaking loss he and his wife Jena Sims recently endured.
Sims on Oct. 6 announced that she and Koepka lost a pregnancy at 16 weeks earlier this year.
“At 16 weeks, we learned that our baby’s heart had stopped beating,” Sims announced in a social media post. “This is a grief no parent is ever prepared for. We are devastated, but remain hopeful to give Crew a sibling one day.
“Too often, these struggles happen in silence. There is still so much and research needed to better understand and support women’s reproductive health. If you’re expecting or have experienced pregnancy loss or infertility, please know you are not alone.
“Lastly, I want to recognize the doctors and nurses who must deliver this kind of heartbreaking news every day. It has to be the hardest part of their job, and I’m holding space in my heart for you too.”
In a separate Instagram story, Sims said, “There is no timeline or rulebook for healing. If I can make one woman feel less lonely by sharing, then I’ve done my job.”
Brooks Koepka, Jena Sims Reflect on Parenthood
The couple welcomed their first child, Crew, in 2023. The 2-year-old was with his mom and dad over the weekend, as Koepka played in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. It was an extra special occasion for the five-time major champion getting a chance to be at The Old Course at St. Andrews with his wife and son.
“It’s my favorite place in the whole wide world, and I get to be here with my favorite people,” Koepka said in a video for the tournament’s social media accounts. “My son Crew gets to hit, he’s hit a putt here, he’s hit a putt at Augusta. The whole thing is, I dunno, surreal. The inner kid in me is excited for him.”
In the same video, Sims also reflected on what she has gained as a mother.
“I’ve definitely learned what my strengths and weaknesses are more since having a kid,” she said.
Koepka also shared some photos from the week in an Instagram post with the caption “A week I’ll cherish forever with my Crew,” a reflection that takes on even greater significance after Sims’ heartbreaking revelation.
How Fatherhood Has Changed Brooks Koepka
Koepka didn’t immediately react publicly to his wife’s announcement, which isn’t surprising given his close-to-the-vest nature.
However, the notoriously icy Koepka has seemingly thawed in recent years. Perhaps that has something to do with his move to LIV Golf and the massive payday that came with it, a payday that sets up his family for generations. He also was shockingly vulnerable in his appearance on the Netflix “Full Swing” series about his struggles as a golfer.
This shift in personality coincides with his intro into parenthood, and that’s almost certainly not a coincidence.
“I think my life has changed a lot the last four years,” he said in April, per GolfMonthly.com. “Obviously having a son changes, too, my perspective on life, not just golf. Maybe golf was kind of everything for me. But having Crew, it definitely changes my perspective. It’s definitely softened me quite a bit. I’m enjoying this new — I don’t want to say new me, but just a softer side. It’s really fun.”
