The Cleveland Browns found themselves back in the win column in Week 8 after picking up an encouraging victory over the Miami Dolphins one week earlier. With a 32-13 defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots, the Browns are back to the drawing board, as they continue to attempt to figure out how to get their offense to support their stout defense.
As if losing wasn’t bad enough, Cleveland lost a key piece of its defense, rookie linebacker Carson Schwesinger, to an ankle injury along the way in this one. After his day came to a premature end, the team received a tough update on his injury status, as it appears Schwesinger will be forced to miss some time amid his strong debut campaign in the NFL.
Carson Schwesinger Set to Miss Time with Ankle Injury
In the first half of their contest against the Patriots, the Browns did a good job of limiting star second-year quarterback Drake Maye and his high-powered offense. The Pats had to settle for just three field goals in the first half, but Cleveland couldn’t get off the ground on offense itself, scoring just one touchdown on its first drive before quickly being shut down.
Eventually, Maye figured things out, and he led New England to another victory. Losing Schwesinger, who has quickly become a key piece of the Browns’ defense, certainly did not help. Through eight games, Schwesinger has been an absolute machine, racking up 64 tackles, one sack, one interception, and one pass deflection for Cleveland.
The No. 33 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Schwesinger has been one of several players who have helped turn the Browns’ defense into one of the best units in the league. Shortly after Cleveland’s loss to N.E., it was confirmed that Schwesinger has suffered a high-ankle sprain, and while he’s set to miss time, it is reportedly not as serious an injury as it could have been.
“The MRI confirmed a high-ankle sprain, but not believed to be a major one. Carson Schwesinger will be reevaluated after the bye to see when he might play,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared in a post on X.
Browns Hoping Carson Schwesinger’s Absence Isn’t a Long One

Losing Schwesinger, even if it’s just for a short period of time, is a brutal blow for the Browns. Their linebacker corps is already in rough shape, as Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Nathaniel Watson, and Winston Reid are all already on injured reserve. That means Jerome Baker and Eastern Mascaraenas-Arnold will be tasked with helping Devin Bush and Mohamoud Diabate pick up the slack for the time being.
The good news for Cleveland is that it has its bye week in Week 9, meaning that Schwesinger will be given some extra time to get himself healthy. However, chances are he isn’t going to be ready to play in Week 10, as high-ankle sprains typically take a couple of weeks to recover from. Regardless, the Browns will enjoy their time off before turning their attention to their Week 10 contest against the one-win New York Jets.
