The Cleveland Browns have five quarterbacks on their roster. Unfortunately, however, none of them are very good. Deshaun Watson, who was expected to be one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL after the Browns signed him to a mega deal, has been a complete bust on and off the field.Â
Joe Flacco has put together an excellent career for himself, but he’s nearing the end of his career, if not at the end already. Kenny Pickett has never shown much of anything.Â
Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are both unproven rookies, with much to prove if they want to stick around in the NFL for the next few years.
Browns Taking Multiple Swings on the Quarterback Position
The Cleveland Browns’ selection of two quarterbacks in the draft showed that they understood the position isn’t in a good spot. Sanders should have an opportunity to compete for the starting job eventually, but that isn’t the case right now.Â
However, if he doesn’t get that chance, or he doesn’t succeed with it when he does, there’s a chance that none of the quarterbacks on the Browns roster outside of Watson might be back next season.
According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, he believes it’s possible that Sanders and the rest of the quarterbacks in the Browns’ room, outside of Watson, could be gone in 2026.Â
“Flacco’s guaranteed money is $3 million,” Graziano said. “Pickett’s is a little over $2.6 million. Neither is signed beyond 2025. Gabriel was a third-round pick, while Sanders was taken in the fifth round.Â
“Sure, the Browns still owe Deshaun Watson $92 million over the next two years, but there’s nothing they can do about that now, and they’re clearly looking for a post-Watson answer. Picking up an extra 2026 first-round pick in their draft day deal with the Jaguars puts them in position to move on from their entire QB room next year if they want to do so.”
How Many Chances Will Sanders Get in the NFL?
If the Cleveland Browns move on from Sanders, he should get another opportunity around the NFL. However, some have suggested that won’t be the case.Â
When examining the situation, Steven Corder of Athlon Sports raised some valid points, drawing on his impressive career at Colorado.
âFor Colorado fans, the situation feels both surreal and frustrating,â he wrote. âHow does a player with top-tier talent, one who threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2024 behind a porous offensive line, get buried this quickly?â
He noted that there could be some politics at play, as the media has disliked Sanders for whatever reason.Â
Whether it be his father, Deion Sanders, showing off with jewelry and other ways, Sanders isn’t loved. Many of it is unfair, as heâs just a young kid who wants to play football, but that’s the NFL.Â
âThe truth may lie in NFL politics, roster math, and a harsh reality: draft pedigree still matters,â he added.
âCould a team in need of quarterback depth, like the Raiders, Giants, or even the Broncos, come calling? Or will Sanders be forced to prove himself on a practice squad, far from the spotlight he once thrived in?â
