After three consecutive starts, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is sporting a record of 1-2 under center. The Cleveland Browns have lost two straight games with Sanders under center, falling to the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans.
Even though it’s not ideal that the Browns have lost their last two games with Sanders leading the way, the rookie signal-caller is coming off his best games as a pro, throwing for 364 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also scored a rushing touchdown.
Despite having the best game of his NFL career thus far, Sanders’ breakout performance wasn’t enough to get the best of Cam Ward‘s squad, who came out on top with running back Tony Pollard stealing the show with 161 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns.
With Sanders making some progress with his play, the question turns to what the future holds for the 23-year-old.
Browns QB Coach Opens Up About Shedeur Sanders’ Future

Ahead of Week 15’s clash with the Chicago Bears, Browns quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave provided some insight on what the future may hold for Sanders.
“Yeah, I don’t know that I’m in a good spot to answer that today,” Musgrave said during his media availability on Friday. “That’s probably going to be for the offseason, where we can take a deep breath and reflect a little bit. Right now, we’re pretty much in our, as you can imagine, our weekly battle mode of getting ready for a Friday practice in red area, making sure we’re sharp on the goal line, two-point plays and all that so we can go put our best foot forward versus Chicago (Bears). Then after the seven-game stretch as you described, there’ll be time in the offseason to reflect and really break it down and get to the crux of the matters.”
Clearly, Musgrave isn’t ready to make an assessment on Sanders and where he sees things going for the Colorado product. However, the rookie quarterback will have more opportunities to prove his worth to the team to finish out the regular season.
Browns QB Deshaun Watson Making Progress

Even though Deshaun Watson won’t make his return to the field for the Browns during the 2025 NFL season, the veteran quarterback is making progress in his recovery from an Achilles injury, according to Musgrave.
“Yeah, Deshaun’s doing more out there on the practice field, more than he did last week, and we’re going to have some good drills with him today and get him some plays,” Musgrave said. “And so, I think each and every day he’s doing more, and it’s just great to have him out there. Like I’ve talked about, it’s been great to have him on the sideline for our young QBs. It was great to have him there for Joe (Flacco) – he and Joe had a really good rapport. Of course, they were battling against each other, warriors that saw each other, of course, in the AFC for those years. So, just been a pleasure to have Deshaun here this year. I don’t know where we’d be without him.”
It’ll be interesting to see what happens in Cleveland once the forgettable 2025 campaign is in the rearview, as the future of the quarterback position for the Browns will almost certainly be a hot topic of discussion.
