Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Called Out for Media Dust-Up

Colin Cowherd offered some advice to Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders after his postgame exchange with a reporter following the team’s preseason opener.

Sanders was riding high after passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-10 win against the Carolina Panthers. After the game, he appeared to have a tense conversation with Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland.

“Tony, I be hoping you have something positive to say about me. You always say negative stuff about me. I’ve never seen you say anything positive about me. And I’m like, ‘I ain’t done nothing to you,’” Sanders said before cracking a smile and walking away. “What did I do!”

Cowherd, a supporter of Sanders, offered the rookie some advice while breaking down the clip.

“Shedeur, what are you doing? Get out of there. I don’t want you watching Tony Grossi TikTok clips,” Cowherd said. “Don’t look for sympathy and support from a local radio guy. Watch film. And again, it’s not the end of the world. He is a good kid, but the judgment thing for him is going to have to be exceptional.”

Cowherd: Shedeur Sanders Needs Maturity to Find Success

Sanders made an impression in his first start, adding fuel to a hype train that was already moving at full speed. Cowherd believes the rookie has the tools to succeed in the NFL but stressed that Sanders must excel in the finer points of the position to make his mark.

“His traits are all good enough to be a mid-tier NFL quarterback — Dak Prescott-level. I think he throws a better ball than Dak. But he’s not great at those things. He’s not Cam (Newton), he’s not Big Ben, he’s not Josh Allen, Mahomes, or Stafford. So he’s going to have to be better in the other 30-40% of quarterback play, which is maturity, focus, IQ, film study and pre-snap excellence.”

After his first preseason action, Sanders was confident but admitted he could have been better.

“I felt like I knew the answers to the test. I know I’m ready for the moment,” Sanders said. “Did I play up to par? No, I don’t feel like I did, but overall the main goal was to win and that’s honestly what we did.”

Browns Still Undecided on Starting QB for Next Preseason Tilt

It’s still to be determined if Sanders will get a second preseason start this week when the Browns take on the Philadelphia Eagles. Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Joe Flacco were all inactive for the preseason opener.

Gabriel returned to team drills on Monday after dealing with a tight hamstring. Pickett is still expected to be sidelined for the preseason game and the Browns may not suit up 40-year-old Joe Flacco for the matchup.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said the team has not yet decided on their plan.

“I’m not there on the game itself. By Wednesday, Thursday, I’ll have a better feel for the game and how we’re going to handle that,” Stefanski said on Monday. “I’ll update you guys. But we’re not there yet.”

Tyler Huntley, who the team signed last week, will also be in consideration for preseason reps.
