Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been climbing the depth chart all season, making his way up from the No. 4 spot in the summer to No. 1 as the Buffalo Bills come into town.
But he could be facing one of his biggest challenges yet this week, with the Bills bringing one of the league’s best pass defenses to town. Sanders spoke out about the challenge this week, saying he’s ready for the challenge.
Shedeur Sanders ‘Excited’ to Face Bills
As Joe Reedy of The Associated Press noted, the Bills have held opposing quarterbacks to a 60.5% completion percentage and performed particularly well against one of the top areas of strength for Sanders.
“The Bills have also allowed a league-low 1,221 yards after the catch, which is one area where the Browns have thrived in Sandersâ four starts,” Reedy wrote.
Sanders is not backing down from the challenge. He told reporters this week that he’s excited to get the chance to prove himself against a top passing defense.
âWell, Iâm just excited that Iâm able to get everybodyâs best,â Sanders said. âIâm just getting in the league and my feet settled and everything. So I get excited knowing Iâm able to face those challenges because youâve got to understand this, this year right here, this is worst itâs going to be. You know what Iâm saying? This is where Iâm building from. This is where Iâm understanding different things. This is where everythingâs translating for me.â
Sanders is getting an extended audition for a role with the Browns in 2026, when the quarterback room gets more crowded after the return of Deshaun Watson. The former Colorado quarterback said he knows he needs to bring up his completion percentage.
âIâve got to get more completions and even whenever weâre down or anything I canât press. Just work within the game and just keep driving the ball. Get first downs,â he said. âI mean, Iâm not really looking in the numbers. Iâm looking at the wins. So that achieves everything.â
Bills Need Win to Keep Playoff Pace
The Bills are facing a must-win scenario against the Browns if they want to keep their division hopes alive. After last week’s comeback win over the New England Patriots, the Bills have a glimmer of hope in their bid for a sixth straight division title, but little margin for error.
In order to win the division, the Bills must win one more game than the Patriots over the final three games of the season and would need one of New England’s losses to come against either the New York Jets or Miami Dolphins. While the Bills would not be able to make up ground on the Patriots this week, they would need to avoid a loss that would make their path to the playoffs even more narrow.
While the Bills would not be able to clinch the division until the conclusion of the season, they do have the chance to secure a wild-card berth this weekend. A Bills win combined with a loss or tie from either the Houston Texans or Indianapolis Colts would clinch a playoff berth for Buffalo.
