During his press conference at the University of Colorado in July, football legend Deion Sanders noted that he underwent surgery to remove his bladder after doctors saw a tumor. Sanders underwent the surgery, and since then, there haven’t been any signs of cancer. According to Sanders, they did what they had to do, but he made it, seemingly announcing that he was cancer-free.Â
“This was not an easy task. … It was dynamic. It was tough. It wasn’t a cakewalk. It wasn’t easy,” said Sanders, per ESPNâs Jeff Legwold. “That was a fight, but we made it.”
For his son, Shedeur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns, this had to be something that he didn’t ever want to deal with. Cancer is one of the worst things in the world, but it can impact anybody at any given time, which is what makes it even worse.Â
Deion Sanders Kept His Sons in the Dark
However, according to the Browns’ rookie, it doesn’t sound like Sanders really had his son in the loop. According to Shedeur, his father knew that he was going to take care of that himself, and he wanted his sons on the football field, as Shilo Sanders is with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, looking to make the team.Â
Instead of worrying about their father during one of the most challenging moments of his life, he needed them to stay strong and focus on football, showing the type of man he is.Â
“Dad, he’s one person that he’ll handle his, we handle what we’ve got to do. It was like, ‘y’all need to focus on what y’all could focus on. Y’all can’t sit here and feel sorry for me, and then that’s affecting y’all doing that.” Shedeur said, per NFL.com.
“At the end of the day, you’re all able to see and you’re all able to understand everything on and off the field that I go through. So then you’ve got to be some type of human at some point in the way I’m doing everything and how I’m handling everything that’s thrown at me. You’ve got no choice but to applaud that.”
Why Hasn’t Coach Prime Been at Browns Camp?
Sanders hasn’t shown up to any Cleveland Browns practices or the facility yet, as Shedeur doesn’t want him there.Â
Many have questioned both of their characters over the past few years for different reasons, but much of this criticism has been unfair.Â
Not only do situations like this show that, but outside of the family liking to wear flashy jewelry and sunglasses, they haven’t done anything. They have some swagger to them, and it’s only fair that they do. Deion is arguably one of the greatest players to ever lace them up, and Shedeur had a great college career. They’ve earned the right to have some cockiness in their attitude.Â
However, during moments like this, it shows that everybody is human. Sanders didn’t want anybody to know, and to this day, Shedeur and others don’t even understand what really went down.Â
“My sons, to this day, don’t know what transpired. I just told them it was something with my foot,” Sanders said in a press conference about his cancer diagnosis. “I wanted them to focus on making the team and not focused on Dad.”
