Amid the many storylines that came out of the Browns‘ frustrating 23-16 loss to the Ravens in Week 11, one that was easily overlooked was the injury suffered by cornerback Dom Jones, the rookie who had appeared in eight games with Cleveland this season.
Coach Kevin Stefanski announced in his meeting with reporters that Jones probably would be going to the injured reserve, meaning he would miss at least the next four games.
Said Stefanski: “Injury front, Dom Jones has a significant knee injury, likely heading to IR.”
The Browns moved quickly to find a replacement, as JL Sports, the agency that represents cornerback D’Angelo Ross, announced that he had been signed by the Browns off the Texans’ practice squad.
The agency’s Twitter/X account wrote (spelling their client’s name wrong): “Congratulations to client Deangelo Ross (sic) signing with the @Browns active roster.”
Ross is a 29-year-old veteran who began his career with the Patriots in 2020, and spent the last three seasons in Houston. He played 26 games for the Texans in that span, though only three games this season–and all on special teams.
Browns Injuries Driving Narrative
Of course, injuries are the looming question for the Browns as they stare down the barrel of the remaining weeks of this season. The switch from Dillon Gabriel to Shedeur Sanders at quarterback, an issue that has dominated in Cleveland for more than a month, was triggered by a concussion suffered by Gabriel during the Ravens game.
Sanders filled in for him during the second half. As things stand, Sanders is the Browns’ QB1, and Stefanski had only limited things to say about Gabriel’s health.
Asked about the concussion for Gabriel, Stefanski said, “He was feeling symptoms at halftime, obviously got with the trainers immediately and addressed it.”
NFL teams are limited in what they can divulge about concussions, and when Stefanski was asked how Gabriel was the day after the game, he demurred.
“Yeah, I’m not going to get into specifics, but he’s still in the protocol,” Stefanski said.
‘What the Hell Is Going on in Cleveland?’
No matter where the Browns turn for their quarterback in Week 12 and beyond, there is a fear that the team might have alienated players from both Gabriel and Sanders with the way they have handled the two over the course of the season. That was the thought from former coach Rex Ryan, speaking on the ESPN program “Get Up” this week.
Ryan was surprised by the lack of energy from the Browns offense when Sanders came in to play.
“This, 100%, it doesn’t seem right. Here’s the thing, is it the kid, or is it how you treated this guy?” he said. “I don’t know. There’s certainly a disconnect. … I am gonna say this, the only energy I saw in the entire stadium was when that kid popped on the field. When Shedeur walked on the field, you know who was wanting to see him play? The dang fans. And you know who never cared? His teammates.
“What the hell is going on in Cleveland? Are you not giving this kid a chance from Day One? Why the hell did you trade up for him in the first place? Or is it something about the kid that you can’t stand?”
