The Boston Bruins are just like every other NHL team; they want to win. They are assembling a younger team without compromising their goal of making the playoffs. Casey Mittelstadt and Pavel Zacha have been at the center of trade rumors this offseason.
Now another name has emerged: Fabian Lysell. He was recently linked to the Edmonton Oilers.
Bruins Fabian Lysell Linked to Oilers
A Bruins-centric YouTube channel, Bruins Diehards, published a video on Monday, August 18th. This video examines a rumor involving Lysell and the Oilers.
“Dominic Tiano suggested in my Discord that the Boston Bruins and the Oilers have been having conversations and that Fabian Lysell’s name has popped up more than once,” Court Lalonde of Bruins Diehards said.
This is the first time that the Oilers have been connected to Lysell. But it’s not the first time that Dominic Tiano has reported an interest between the Bruins and another club.
Tiano reported via an X social media post that the Columbus Blue Jackets turned down an offer from the Bruins for Yegor Chinakhov. It’s not known at this time what exactly the offer for Chinakhov was.
The Bruins and Oilers Have Been Regular Trade Partners
The Bruins have connected with the Stan Bowman-led Oilers multiple times already.
First, the Oilers and Bruins linked up with the New Jersey Devils to pull off a three-team trade that saw Trent Frederic and Max Jones head to Edmonton. They also acquired forward Viktor Arvidsson on July 1st.
Having a trade history with a GM doesn’t guarantee that a deal gets done. However, it’s clear that the two enjoy doing business together and aren’t afraid to scratch each other’s backs to make their respective teams better.
Bowman is such a fan of Frederic that the two parties agreed to an eight-year extension this summer, much to the ire of some Oilers fans.
What Could the Bruins Get For Lysell?
Lysell hasn’t lit the world on fire in North America. The 5-foot-11, 181 lb forward played 12 games with the Bruins in 2024-25. The 22-year-old recorded three points while playing 13:27 per game.
The Bruins’ 21st overall selection in the 2021 Entry Draft has spent the majority of his time over the last three years with the Providence Bruins of the AHL. In 162 AHL games, he has recorded 40 goals and 121 points.
A few young players who have already been identified as potential trade bait are Beau Akey, Vasily Podkolzin, and Matt Savoie. Each of these three makes sense for different reasons. Akey is an offense-first blueliner, Podkolzin is a young and gritty winger, while Savoie is in a similar boat to Lysell: a skilled winger who hasn’t gotten a full taste of the NHL yet.
Mattias Janmark might be the one Oiler who fits the Boston Bruins mold. Janmark is a hard-nosed forechecker who plays fast and hard. He is a penalty-killer who can play up and down the lineup. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch wasn’t afraid to play him on the top line with Connor McDavid to give the lines a different look.
Janmark was primarily utilized in a bottom-six role, playing both as a winger and a center. He is entering the second year of a three-year deal paying him $1.4 million a season. He recorded 18 points in 80 games last year.
Until a legitimate deal is consummated, chalk this one up as another conversation that doesn’t cross the finish line.
