Bruno Fernandes blamed referee Chris Kavanagh for ‘triggering him’ in the build-up to his missed penalty in Manchester United’s draw with Fulham.

United led through a Rodrigo Muniz own goal just before the hour mark on Sunday at Craven Cottage but Emile Smith Rowe’s equaliser ensured the points were shared.

The visitors had the chance to take the lead in the first-half when VAR awarded them a spot kick with Calvin Bassey judged to have thrown Mason Mount to the ground as they jostled on a corner kick.

Fernandes, usually so ruthless from 12 yards, slammed a woeful spot kick well over the cross bar.

As he was preparing to take the penalty, referee Kavanagh accidentally bumped into the United captain while he was deep in concentration.

Fernandes was seen complaining to the match official before taking the penalty, insisting post-match the moment threw him off with Kavanagh not offering an apology.

‘Yeah I was upset,’ Fernandes told Sky Sports. ‘As every penalty does, you have your own routines, your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee did not apologise and that is what triggered me in that moment.

‘That is not the excuse for missing the penalty, I just had a very bad hit on the ball, I put my foot too [much] under the ball and that is why it went over the bar.’

United boss Ruben Amorim admitted his skipper was left unhappy for the rest of the game as a result of what happened in the final moments before the missed penalty.’

‘I think he is not used to missing penalties,’ Amorim said.

‘He knows the importance that this moment can have [and make a] huge impact on the team.

‘During the game he was not happy because he was not involved and he has so much responsibility and I think he thought missing the penalty was huge for us.’

United have picked up just one point from their opening two matches of the new season following defeat at home to Arsenal last Sunday.

They welcome newly-promoted Burnley to Old Trafford next Saturday.
